This paper builds on a Transparency International – sponsored research study funded by the Dutch<br />

Government into the National Integrity System in practice. The study involved 18 countries, using incountry<br />

researchers and an overview report. This paper assesses the findings <strong>of</strong> the study to consider<br />

how the approach can work in practice, and what the approach can reveal about the causes and nature<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>corruption</strong> as well as the implications for reform.<br />

World Bank policy research working paper 3122. Washington DC: World Bank<br />

This paper uses individual-level data for 35 countries and investigates the microeconomic determinants<br />

<strong>of</strong> attitudes towards <strong>corruption</strong>. It finds that women, employed, less wealthy, and older individuals to be<br />

more averse to <strong>corruption</strong>. The paper also provides evidence that social effects play an important role<br />

in determining individual attitudes towards <strong>corruption</strong>, as these are robustly and significantly associated
