Also surviving are 15 grandchildren. She was a sister of Catherine Ando, Ridgeville Park, N.J.; Mary Anodide, San Juan, Puerto Rico; Joseph, Westwood, N.J.; Margaret Burns, New Milford, N.J., and Dorothy Casper, Nanty Glo. Mrs. Kowal was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Nanty Glo and the Altar-Rosary Society. Friends were received at the Harry R. Ondriezek II Funeral Home, Nanty Glo, where the rosary was recited Tuesday evening. Funeral Mass was celebrated Wednesday, Sept. 23, at St. Mary's Catholic Church by the Rev. John Neugebauer. Kowal of 711 Bloom Ave., Nanty Glo, died Saturday, Dec. 3, 1994, at Conemaugh Hospital. He was 90. Born Nov. 17, 1904, in Smoke Run, he was a son of Michael and Tekla (Orlosky) Kowal. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, the former Helen Tursky; brothers, Nicholas, John and Martin; and sister, Mary Harchak. Surviving are these children: Natalie, wife of Robert Wells, Houston, Texas; Michael, married to the former Linda Carney, Ellicott City, Md.; Mary, wife of Thomas Malcotti, Indiana, Pa.; Helen, wife of Luke Michelbacher, Nanty Glo; and Barbara, wife of Stephen Oblinsky, Nanty Glo. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; sisters and, Ann Slinkosky, Coalport; Helen Parsons, Brooklyn, Mich.; Catherine Daley, Blairstown, N.J.; and brother, Peter and his wife, Marie, Smoke Run. A retired coal miner, Mr. Kowal was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Nanty Glo; the Holy Name Society of St. Mary's and UMWA Local 1386, Nanty Glo. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Tuesday, Dec. 6 at St. Mary's Church by the Monsignor John Little. Interment followed in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Portage. (The Journal, Nanty Glo, PA, December 7, 1994) KOWAL, Peter Smoke Run - Peter Kowal, 93, of Smoke Run, died Thurs Nov. 16, 2000, at the Clearfield Hospital. Born June 20, 1907 in Smoke Run, he was a son of Michael and Tekla (Orlosky) Kowal. Mr. Kowal was a retired coalminer. He was a member of the UMW. On Nov. 1, 1952 in St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church, he wed Maria (Karabin) Kowal of Smoke Run. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Marianne Kowal Himes of Pittsburgh; three grandchildren, Bonnie Himes of Savannah, Ga., Brenda Himes of Seattle, Wash., and Jennifer Himes of Boca Raton, Fla.; two sisters Catherine Daly of Blairstown, NJ and Helen Parson of Lapeer, Mich., and a number of nieces and nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mary Harchak and Anna Slinkosky; and four brothers, John, Martin, Nick and Mike. Divine Liturgy will be served by the Very Rev. Canon James E. Poorman at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church, ! Ramey, on Monday at 11 a.m. Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday and on Monday from 9-10:30 a.m. at the Birger A. Freeberg Funeral Home,
Houtzdale. Parastas will be sung at 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. (The Progress, Clearfield, PA, Nov 17, 2000) KOWAL, Tekla C. (Orlosky) Mrs. Tekla C. Kowal Smoke Run - Mrs. Tekla C. Kowal, 93, of Smoke Run died yesterday in the Phillipsburg State General Hospital following a long illness. She was born in Austria on June 23, 1869 and came to the United States and Smoke Run in 1894. Surviving are five sons, Nicholas, Cincinnati, Ohio; John, Baltimore, Md.; Martin, St. Michaels; Peter, Smoke Run; and Michael, Nanty Glo; four daughters, Mrs. Mary Harchack, Houtzdale; Mrs. Anna Slinkosky, Coalport; Mrs. Catherine Daly, Teaneck, N. J.; Mrs. Helen Parsons, Rochester, Mich.; 42 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael, 20 years ago. Requiem High Mass will be sung Monday at 9 p.m. in St. Barbara's Catholic Church, Houtzdale, with the Rev. Fr. Stephen Katarzynski officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Ramey. Friends may call at the Buranovsky Funeral Home, Ramey, today from 7 to 10 p.m. and tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. (The Progress, Clearfield, Pa., July 14, 1962) KOWALCYK, Andrew Andrew Kowalcyk, 90, of Madera, died Monday, Jan. 9, 2006 at 2:10 pm at the Clearfield Hospital. Mr. Kowalcyk was born in Madera, PA on January 24, 1915, the son of the late Joseph and Agnes Kowalcyk. He was a member of St. Mary's Church Nativity of the Theotokos Orthodox Church Madera, PA. He worked as a coal miner for 48 years. He was a mine Foreman for several area mines and a mine superintendent for Bradford Coal. He later retired as a Federal Mine Inspector. Mr. Kowalcyk was past Council President and very active member of St.Mary's Orthodox Church for many years. He was member of the United Mine Workers of America and with his three brothers he co-owned and operated the Kowalcyk Brothers Mine in Boardman. On Nov. 27, 1940 in St. Mary's Orthodox Church he married the former Kathryn Russin, who survives of Madera. He is also survived by three sons, Fred Kowalcyk and his wife Yvonne of Seven Hills, OH., Eugene Kowalcyk and his wife Teresa of Richmond Heights, OH., and Ed Kowalcyk of Houtzdale, RD. Three grandchildren, Michelle Kaifas and her husband Steve; Jeff Kowalcyk and Connie Kowalcyk. Two great-grandchildren, Madeline and Grant Kaifas. And one sister survives, Dorothy Miller and her husband Jesse of Punxsutawney, PA. Hewas preceded in death by three brothers; Frank, John and Ben and two sisters; Helen Gulish and Mary Solomon. Friends are invited to call Wednesday , Jan. 11, 2006 from 2- 4 & 7-9 pm at the Kruise Funeral Home, Inc. 254 Lynn St. Madera, PA, and on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006 from 9:00 until the time of services at St. Mary's Orthodox Church, Madera. A Panikhida service will be sung on Wednesday at 8:00 pm in the funeral home. Funeral Service at St. Mary's Church Nativity of the Theotokos Orthodox Church, Madera, at 10 AM on Thursday, January 12th, with Rev. Fr. Hieromonk David Lewis officiating.
