Proven protection
Cruise ships are often characterised by high population
densities, crowded public rooms and living
accommodation, shared sanitary facilities and common
water and food supplies. Because of this, passengers and crew are
at risk from outbreaks of infectious disease.
While normal cleaning processes are effective at reducing
bacteria on many communal high-touch surfaces such as stairway
rails, doorknobs and telephones, it is impossible to clean these areas
every minute of every day. In between cleaning, bacteria can begin
to grow on surfaces. As they grow, so does the risk of cross
contamination, infection and illness among passengers and crew.
BioCote works with manufacturers of products associated with
environments where hygiene is a priority. These manufacturers
incorporate BioCote antimicrobial technology into their products,
giving them built-in antimicrobial protection.
Along with its manufacturing partners, BioCote offers an
expansive portfolio of high-quality products that have the ability to
reduce cross contamination.
The company is a leader in the application of silver ion
technology, providing highly efficacious products, producing clean,
safe and hygienic environments.
Silver is a natural antimicrobial and has been used for centuries
because of its ability to preserve against spoilage. Independent
laboratory testing consistently shows BioCote’s silver antimicrobial
technology is highly effective against a wide range of diseasecausing
bacteria and fungi.
Levels of bacteria have been shown to be reduced by up to 99%
over a two-hour period on a BioCote-protected surface, compared
to non-protected surfaces where bacteria can proliferate at
drastic rates.
Clean bill of health
BioCote performed the first ever environmental study investigating
the effectiveness of silver ion-protected products at reducing levels
of bacteria in hospital wards; a study performed in association with
the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust.
Two hospital wards were included; one refurbished with BioCoteprotected
furniture and equipment while the other was refurbished
in a comparable way without the protection.
The aim of the trial was to compare the levels of bacteria on the
protected products, which included blinds, tiles, door handles and
Company insight > Safety at sea
While most cruises go without a hitch, recent cases of bacterial contamination have hit the
headlines. Surface protection solutions by BioCote ® offer cruise lines the chance to minimise these
risks and avoid potential health hazards for passengers.
Silver is a natural antimicrobial and
has been used for centuries
because of its ability to preserve
against spoilage.
BioCote can reduce bacteria levels by up to 99% for over two hours.
light switches, with standard untreated items. The wards were used
for their normal clinical practice for 12 months before environmental
sampling commenced.
Almost 1,500 samples were collected from the wards over a
period of six months and sent to an independent microbiology
laboratory for analysis.
Results showed that the BioCote-protected products were 95.8%
less contaminated with bacteria than the equivalent untreated
products in the control environment. In addition, untreated surfaces
in the BioCote-protected ward were shown to be significantly less
contaminated than equivalent surfaces in the control environment.
An explanation of this observation is BioCote-protected surfaces
reduced levels of cross contamination within a treated environment.
These results were reproduced in a subsequent environmental
study investigating the effectiveness of BioCote-protected products
at reducing levels of contamination in a UK nursing home.
BioCote provides continuous proven protection to millions of
people across the globe. Its antimicrobial protection is applicable to
any working environment at risk of cross contamination. With the
publicised outbreak of infectious diseases on board cruise ships,
companies are turning to more innovative methods of defence
against a foe that continues to ride the waves.
