sugars from 0.59 to 3.47 per cent and reducing sugars from 0.12 to 1.56 per cent. The most<br />
promising accessions for TSS is Bandarwada-3 with 22.40 o Brix followed by Dabose-1 with<br />
o<br />
17.05 Brix. Korikanthimath and Desai (2005) have reported a TSS range <strong>of</strong> 6 to 12 o Brix ;<br />
Nair (1986) reported as 11.04 to 16.44 per cent; Khan and Pandya (1936) recorded average<br />
TSS <strong>of</strong> 14.83 per cent ; Joshi (1994) showed 16.45 per cent and Gosavi (1998) recorded<br />
16.47 per cent .However, the TSS <strong>of</strong> “Konkan Amruta”, the first released variety has been<br />
reported to be 9.08 per cent (Patil et al., 2005a).<br />

Joshi (2005) reported that, while producing RTS, a TSS <strong>of</strong> 20 Brix and 0.30 per cent<br />
acidity is usually maintained by addition <strong>of</strong> sugar. But when accession like Bandarwada-3 is<br />
used as raw material for making RTS whose TSS and total acids content in pooled juice is<br />
o<br />
22.40 Brix and 0.64 per cent, addition <strong>of</strong> sugar and citric acid is not required. Such<br />
accessions with promising TSS content can also be employed in preparation <strong>of</strong> syrup and<br />
squash by minimizing the quantity <strong>of</strong> sugar added.<br />
As a result <strong>of</strong> mapping the values by point to grid method (DIVA-GIS s<strong>of</strong>tware-Fig.3),<br />
o o<br />
there were five categories namely 19.0 to 22.0 Brix (red grids), 15.0 to 10.0 Brix (orange<br />
o o<br />
grids), 12.0 to 15.0 Brix (yellow grids), 8.0 to 12.0 Brix (light green grids) and a minimum<br />
o<br />
range <strong>of</strong> 5.0-8.0 Brix (dark green grids).<br />
o<br />
As there is only one accession (Bandarwada 3) having TSS in range <strong>of</strong> 19.0-22.0<br />
Brix, it was not depicted on the map. However, this tree was located in Pernem taluk.<br />
Similarly, maximum diversity for TSS was found in Pernem, Bicholim and Canacona taluks.<br />
Total acids in fruits i.e fresh rind ranged from a minimum <strong>of</strong> 1.22 per cent to a<br />
maximum <strong>of</strong> 11.24 per cent with a grand mean <strong>of</strong> 4.12 per cent. Total acids in juice ranged<br />
from a minimum <strong>of</strong> 0.43 per cent to a maximum <strong>of</strong> 10.97 per cent, with a grand mean <strong>of</strong> 3.72<br />
per cent. Average was drawn for total acids per cent in fruit, juice and extract left out. This<br />
data ranged from a minimum <strong>of</strong> 1.2 per cent to a maximum <strong>of</strong> 7.36 per cent. The grand mean<br />
was 3.78 per cent for all 268 accessions under study. As a result <strong>of</strong> subjecting the data to<br />
point to grid plotting on Goa map, a grid map was obtained with grids <strong>of</strong> five different<br />
colours viz., red, orange, yellow, light green and dark green which illustrated clusters with<br />
average acids ranges viz., 6.0-7.0, 5.0-6.0,<br />
4.0-5.0, 3.0-4.0 and 1.0-3.0 respectively. Red grids were spotted in Pernem, Bardez,<br />
Bicholim, Sattari, Tiswadi, Sanguem and Canacona talukas; orange grids depicting average<br />
acids ranging from 5.0-6.0 per cent were spotted in Pernem, Bardez, Bicholim, Sanguem,<br />
Quepem and Canacona talukas. Accessions having medium average acids ranging from 4.0-<br />
5.0 per cent were found in all the talukas <strong>of</strong> Goa. Lower range <strong>of</strong> average acids (3.0-4.0 per<br />
cent) illustrated by light green grids were spotted in all talukas except Bicholim Ponda and<br />
Mormugao talukas. The lowest range <strong>of</strong> average acidity (1.0-3.0 per cent) symbolized by<br />
dark green grids were seen in Sattari, Bicholim, Bardez, Tiswadi, Salcete and Quepem<br />
talukas.<br />
An attempt was made to classify the accessions into three groups based on two<br />
criteria viz., TSS and total acids in juice. The results showed that for three clusters viz., 1, 2<br />
o<br />
and 3, the cluster means were 7.34, 11.66 and 8.36 respectively for TSS ( Brix); whereas it<br />
