Post Harvest Handling<br />
Processing sector is very vital for this crop, as unlike other fruits, <strong>Kokum</strong> cannot be<br />
consumed as fresh fruit. Its utility starts only after processing. Green mature rind and Red<br />
ripe rind are invariably used for processing <strong>of</strong> dry rind. Rind is also used as base material for<br />
preparing rind products like <strong>Kokum</strong> Syrup, <strong>Kokum</strong> Agal and Amsol (Wet rind). <strong>Kokum</strong><br />
butter is extracted from seeds. (Adsule et al, 2001).<br />
The following value added products <strong>of</strong> Garcinia indica have potential commercial values.<br />

and has great demand in pharmaceutical industry for preparation <strong>of</strong> ointment, cosmetic<br />
industry for face cream and lipsticks.<br />
Medicinal Values <strong>of</strong> <strong>Kokum</strong><br />
Raw fruits are used as anti-helmintic, cardiotonic and useful in bleeding piles,<br />
dysentery and tumors. Young leaves, after being tied in a banana leaf and stewed in hot ashes<br />
are rubbed with cold milk and given as remedy for dysentery. Seed oil is used in preparation<br />
<strong>of</strong> ointments and suppositories, which is made use for local application to ulceration,<br />
fissures <strong>of</strong> the lips and hands (melting and rubbing on the affected part).<br />

Constrains <strong>of</strong> <strong>Kokum</strong> Processing Units<br />
Unorganized production, mostly from the natural scattered plantations, nonavailability<br />
<strong>of</strong> adequate raw material (fruits / seeds), high price <strong>of</strong> raw material high octroi,<br />
transport charges and marketing expenses are the common bottle necks. Labour is not<br />
available as and when required. At times failure <strong>of</strong> electricity and high cost <strong>of</strong> packaging<br />
material also become impediments.<br />
