Greg Miller
Assistant Rochester Fire Chief Greg MILLER, 54, died Tuesday in the emergency room
at Woodlawn Hospital, of an apparent heart attack.
He joined the department in 1982 and was the city’s longest-serving full-time firefighter. He was assistant chief vario
Chief Mike GEARHART said he last appointed Miller assistant chief in 1996.
In a force of relatively young firefighters, Miller was the “seniority guy,” Gearhart said.
A U.S. Army helicopter maintenance man during the Vietnam War, Miller was known for his
level-headed approach to his work, Gearhart said.
“He was a good-guy. Had a great sense of humor,” Gearhart said today. “He just didn’t
get too excited. He’d been around long enough to see a lot of stuff burn. He had a lot of
knowledge from what he’s seen through his career.”
Flags were lowered to half-staff at the fire station and Rochester City Hall today.
The mood at City Hall was somber.
“Greg’s been involved with my life quite a while,” said Mayor Phil Thompson. He noted
both his older sons worked at Miller’s Standard, the service station at Main and Southway 31
Miller co-owned and operated with his brother, Tim, on his days away from the fire station.
“It’s sad to lose such a long-standing good member of the community,” Thompson said.
“The Millers have served Rochester for a long time.
In May, Miller would have served the city 20 years, qualifying him for a full pension. Prior to being hired as a fir
Miller’s son, Scott, followed him into the firefighting profession and is now a Carmel
firefighter.
Firefighters were notified by telephone Tuesday night of Miller’s death.
His wife, Vickie [MILLER], is an instructional assistant at Columbia Elementary School.
Arrangements are pending at Zimmerman Brothers Funeral Home.
