TRENDS IN ARTILLERY
Some of the most outstanding trends in fire support are:
▪The use of artillery units in SASO operations.
▪The development of automatic 155/52 Field Artillery self-propelled
systems that are air-transportable in the A-400 aeroplane.
▪The prevailing use of accuracy units.
▪The ongoing research work on an electromagnetic propulsion gun.
As for anti-aircraft artillery, it is noteworthy to mention:
▪The development of the MEADS missile system network-centric capability.
▪The continuous upgrade of those systems capable of combating RAM
threat.
▪The development of modular missiles.
FIELD ARTILLERY IN AFGHANISTAN
“Afghanistan is a scenario of a great complexity. From a strictly military
point of view, it might well represent the materialization of the
new battlefield. Each country has approached it in a different way,
even more in the Field Artillery environment. This article explains the
participation of every country as far as Field Artillery is concerned
and, in the light of it, infers a number of issues for analysis, which
can be of interest”.
ARTILLERY PEOPLE IN PEACE-KEEPING OPERATIONS
The use of Artillery Units in Peace-Keeping Operations, where artillery
people carry out tasks as general combatants without either their
guns or launchers is proving a very positive experience for the Army.
Not only due to the enhancement of their basic training learned and
put into practice, but mainly because of the experience gained as a result
of being deployed in an Area of Operations, thus acquiring a new
dimension as fighters.
HE FIRST EPAART NASAM
“This article tries to bring forward the execution process and conditions
that made it possible for all the Spanish Army NASAMs Anti-aircraft
Artillery Units: GAAA-II/73 (MAAA) Anti-aircraft Artillery
Battalion and NASAMs Battery of the RAAA-94 (MCANA), to perform
the first launches of AMRAAM missile with this new Weapons System
for the first time in Spain, in the Firing Range at Médano del Loro
(Huelva) on October 1st 2008”.
USE OF GUIDED MUNITIONS IN AFGHANISTAN
The latest technological advances have enabled us to provide accurate
guidance in both Field Artillery munitions and mortars. This has resulted
in an increase in their accuracy and range on targets that were
unattainable until then. Our Field Artillery Units and mortars must
implement this capability in order to properly contribute to the safety
of our troops in operations, especially in Afghanistan.
BASE BURN PROJECTILE MODELLING I
The use of heuristic techniques in order to statistically deal with the
collection of data taken from experiences, shows a calculation procedure
to model the flight of Base Burn projectiles, which leaves out the
tests and measurements used so far in the existing methods.
