The analysis of the byproducts of the <strong>de</strong>struction of carbon tetrachlori<strong>de</strong> by<br />

GC/MS and ECD revealed the presence of no other halogen-containing organic<br />

compo<strong>un</strong>d than CCl4 itself [20]; also, <strong>un</strong><strong>de</strong>r optimal conditions, its concentration never<br />

excee<strong>de</strong>d 10 ppb. In fact, the sole additional species fo<strong>un</strong>d was Cl2 [21], which was<br />

<strong>de</strong>tected by GC/MS and in very small (trace) amo<strong>un</strong>ts. Therefore, alternative pathways<br />

for the loss of carbon and chlori<strong>de</strong> in the <strong>de</strong>struction of CCl4 must exist.
