Commerson, qu'il n'existoit aucune espèce d'animaux quadrupèdes ni d'oiseaux dans l'île de Bourbon et dans celle de France, lorsque les portugais en firent la découverte. Ces deux îles paroissent être les pointes d'un continent englouti, et presque toute leur surface est couverte de matières volcanisées ,• en sorte qu'elles ne sont aujourd'hui peuplées que des animaux qu'on y a transportés. Cet oiseau est précisément de la même grandeur que le précédent ; il a le dessus du corps d'une couleur d'ardoise claire ; le dessous gris blanc ; la gorge blanche ; les grandes plumes de la queue d'un brun foncé, bordées d'un coté d'un peu de couleur d'ardoise ; le bec brun, pointu et effilé ; les pieds gris, et les yeux noirs ; les femelles , et même les petits , ont à peu près" le même plumage que les mâles : on le trouve par-tout en grand nombre dans l'île de Bourbon , où M. le vicomte de Querhoënt l'a observé. Ces oiseaux commencent à nicher au mois de septembre ; on trouve communément trois œufs dans leur nid , et il a y apparence qu'ils font plusieurs pontes par an; ils nichent sur les arbres isolés, et même dans les. vergers j le nid est composé d'herbes sèches et
DES FIGUIERS. 9 de crin à l'intérieur ; les œufs sont bleus : cet oiseau se laisse approcher de très-près; il vole toujours en troupe, vit d'insectes et de petits fruits mous ; lorsqu'il aperçoit dans la campagne une perdrix courir à terre, un lièvre, un chat, etc., il voltige à l'entour en faisant un cri particulier ; aussi sert-il d'indice au chasseur pour trouver le gibier.
