En laissant paître ses chèvres sur son alpage, au coeur<br />
du xix e siècle, Marie-Louise Jaÿ était sans doute<br />
loin de s’imaginer que grâce à elle, sous ses pieds se<br />
tiendrait bientôt l’un des plus importants symboles<br />
de son village. C’est en effet en allant tenter sa chance<br />
à Paris qu’elle rencontra son futur mari, Ernest<br />
Cognacq, avec qui elle créa la Samaritaine avec le<br />
succès que l’on connaît. Elle n’en oublia pas pour<br />
autant le village de son enfance, auquel elle fit don<br />
en 1906 du jardin botanique alpin de la Jaÿsinia.<br />
Aujourd’hui, le jardin botanique abrite près de 2 500<br />
espèces de la flore de montagne provenant des<br />
cinq continents, ainsi qu’un laboratoire où sont<br />
effectuées de nombreuses recherches.<br />
il constitue une promenade incontournable, une<br />
oasis de verdure au cœur du village, d’autant plus<br />
qu’à son sommet se trouve l’un des plus beaux<br />
panoramas sur le village.<br />

A garden planted by destiny<br />
Shepherding her goats on her pastures back in the<br />
19th Century, young Marie-Louise Jaÿ could never<br />
have predicted that, thanks to her, the land she stood<br />
on would one day become one of her village’s most<br />
important features. Leaving her hometown take her<br />
chances in Paris, Marie-Louise married Ernest Cognacq<br />
and created the famous La Samaritaine department<br />
store. Despite her great success, she never forget the<br />
village of her childhood, and in 1906 she bestowed it<br />
a splendid botanical garden called “La Jaÿsinia”.<br />
Today, Samoëns’ botanical garden is home to more<br />
than 2500 species of alpine flora from 5 continents,<br />
along with a laboratory where botanical research takes<br />
place.<br />
A walk through the gardens is a must-do. Explore<br />
this magnificent green zone at the heart of the village<br />
and be rewarded at the top with a stunning panoramic<br />
view over the village’s medieval rooftops.<br />
