Chairman of the IOC Commission
for Culture and Olympic Education
Linking sport with education and culture
is essential for Olympism. The Olympic
Movement is not only the Olympic Games
every four years; it is also a permanent and
universal programme that unites sport with
education, culture, and a measure of social
progress.
This is exactly what the IOC Commission for
Culture and Olympic Education, which I have
had privilege to chair for over 10 years, is
committed to: promoting the Olympic ideal
from the sporting, cultural and educational
points of view.
I should like to take this opportunity to
express my sincere thanks to my fellow
members for their outstanding work and
commitment. Throughout the years, they
have been the spokespersons for the
alliance of culture and education with sport,
and have advocated, through personal
influence and networks, this association and
the propagation of the Olympic ideals.
As you will see in the following pages, the
Commission has undertaken, with the
approval and support of the Executive
Board, many activities between editions of
the Olympic Games to encourage cultural
exchanges and promote the diversity of
cultures, as well as to fill the “gap” between
Games so that Olympism keeps moving
forward at all times.
I am pleased to see that all the members of
the Olympic family are making the utmost
effort to promote the role of sport in
strengthening friendly ties and mutual
respect among peoples.
Never forget that sport without culture
or education would be like a body without
a soul.
