IOC President
Education and culture are at the heart of the
Olympic Movement. The Olympic Charter
clearly stipulates: “The goal of the Olympic
Movement is to contribute to building a
peaceful and better world by educating
youth through sport practised in accordance
with Olympism and its values.”
Like all the other IOC Commissions, the
Commission for Culture and Olympic
Education is a key tool not only for
encouraging and promoting the practice of
physical education and sport but also for
teaching life values and skills, particularly to
young people.
In this Commission brochure, you can find
key information on the importance of
combining sport, education and culture,
from the structure of the Commission to its
history and mission; from the World Forums
and their recommendations to main activities
such as the sport and art, literature, photo and
song contests; from its various partnerships
to its brand new programme, the Olympic
Values Education Programme (OVEP).
I would like to thank every member of the
Commission, who, under the leadership of
Zhenliang He, have worked untiringly to
make education and culture a priority
in the Olympic Movement's agenda, thus
continuing along the path laid by our
founder, Baron Pierre de Coubertin.
I also express my gratitude to all the Olympic
Movement Family, and more particularly
to the Association of the National Olympic
Committees for actively encouraging
NOCs to participate in the Commission's
education and culture programmes, and to
the NOCs themselves and Olympic Solidarity
for making all this possible.
As we look at the unique opportunity offered
by the 2008 Beijing Games, the IOC is more
convinced than ever that sport is more than
just competition. It is a state of mind.
