Olympiart Award
Launched in 1991 and open to be award
every fours years, the Olympiart Award was
the first Commission contest aimed at
strengthening the link between the arts and
the celebration of the Olympiad. It is also
a revival and modern successor of the
Olympic art competitions organised by Pierre
de Coubertin at the early Games.
Painting, architecture and music have been
honoured with the awardees Hans Erni,
Pedro Ramirez Vázquez and Mikis
Theodorakis. All prestigious artists they
also have a strong interest in sport, peace
and youth.
The award rules were changed in 2004 to
ensure the award was given to an artist from
the host country of the Games of the
Olympiad. The new format for the award will
continue for the next Olympiad and the
search for a recipient in China is on. The
presentation of the prize will take place in
Beijing during the Games after the jury has
selected the deserving artist.
