HISTORY AND MISSION
OF THE COMMISSION
The Commission for Culture and Olympic
Education was formed in 2000 with the
merger of the culture and Olympic Academy
and education Commissions.
Chaired by Mr Zhenliang He since its
foundation it has grown into the most
numerous commission within the IOC with
32 members (see next page), composed
of IOC members, representatives of IFs,
NOCs, athletes, the Paralympic movement
and individual experts.
Its role is to advise the IOC President and the
Executive board on what policy the IOC and
the Olympic Movement should adopt in
terms of the promotion of culture and
Olympic education and through its members,
supports the IOC programmes and activities
in the field. The IOC Department of
International Cooperation and Development
is in charge of the administration of
the Commission and coordinating the
implementation of its recommendations.
The Commission policy has two basic
aims based on the fundamental principles
enshrined in the Olympic Charter. It strives to
develop the link between sport and culture in
all its forms, encourages cultural exchange
and promotes the diversity of cultures. It also
aims to promote Olympic education and
supports other institutions which promote
the values of Olympism.
In practical terms the Commission meets
annually over two days. The first day in four
working groups listed below and the second
day as a full Commission.

Academy - chaired by Mr Minos Kyriakou
• Working group for Olympic education
- chaired by Mr Nat Indrapana
• Working group for programme development
- chaired by Mr Klaus Schormann
• Working group for sport, art, literature,
photography and music - chaired by
Mr Ching-Kuo Wu
