Scientific and Cultural
Organization (UNESCO)
In January 2004 the IOC signed a new
cooperation agreement with the United
Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization, in order to strengthen the
cooperation that they established in 1984
and to join efforts and cooperate to ensure
complementarity between the Olympic
ideals and the objectives of the UNESCO in
the areas of physical education and sport.
Under this agreement UNESCO and IOC
undertake to cooperate in activities of common
interest in the areas of physical education
and sport, in particular through the joint
organization of meetings and seminars. In
addition they endeavour to encourage the
development of physical education and
sport, as well as the implementation of the
relevant clauses of the International Charter
for Physical Education and Sport and the
Olympic Charter.
PARTNERSHIPS 59
In concrete terms the Commission brings
the cooperation together through such
events as the World Forum on Sport,
Education and Culture. The last edition
was organized by the IOC and BOCOG in
Beijing in October 2006 in partnership
with UNESCO who provided speakers as
well as assistance to participants from
developing countries. UNESCO has also
been the United Nations specialised agency
behind the activation of the International
Convention Against Doping in Sport.
