In January 2004 the IOC signed a new<br />

cooperation agreement with the United<br />

Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural<br />

Organization, in or<strong>de</strong>r to strengthen the<br />

cooperation that they established in 1984<br />

and to join efforts and cooperate to en<strong>sur</strong>e<br />

complementarity between the Olympic<br />

i<strong>de</strong>als and the objectives of the UNESCO in<br />

the areas of physical education and sport.<br />

Un<strong>de</strong>r this agreement UNESCO and IOC<br />

un<strong>de</strong>rtake to cooperate in activities of common<br />

interest in the areas of physical education<br />

and sport, in particu<strong>la</strong>r through the joint<br />

organization of meetings and seminars. In<br />

addition they en<strong>de</strong>avour to encourage the<br />

<strong>de</strong>velopment of physical education and<br />

sport, as well as the implementation of the<br />

relevant c<strong>la</strong>uses of the <strong>International</strong> Charter<br />

for Physical Education and Sport and the<br />

Olympic Charter.<br />

PARTNERSHIPS 59<br />

In concrete terms the Commission brings<br />

the cooperation together through such<br />

events as the World Forum on Sport,<br />

Education and Culture. The <strong>la</strong>st edition<br />

was organized by the IOC and BOCOG in<br />

Beijing in October 2006 in partnership<br />

with UNESCO who provi<strong>de</strong>d speakers as<br />

well as assistance to participants from<br />

<strong>de</strong>veloping countries. UNESCO has also<br />

been the United Nations specialised agency<br />

behind the activation of the <strong>International</strong><br />

Convention Against Doping in Sport.
