International Olympic Academy
(IOA)
The International Olympic Academy was
set up in 1961 and functions as a
multicultural interdisciplinary centre that
aims at studying, enriching and promoting
Olympism. The Olympic Charter states that
the role of the IOC is “to encourage and
support the activities of the International
Olympic Academy (IOA)… which dedicate
themselves to Olympic education”. The IOA
activities notably include annual international
sessions and special sessions devoted to
Olympic education.
The Commission collaborates closely with
the International Olympic Academy and has
a working group devoted to the IOA, chaired
by its President, Mr Minos Kyriakou.
Exceptionally the Commission held its annual
meeting in 2007 at the IOA to allow all
members to experience Olympia first hand
and to attend the last day of the Session for
Directors of National Olympic Academies
(NOAs).

Around the world 134 NOAs are working
for the promotion of Olympism and the
Commission actively supports the work of
the IOA to increase their number and the
hence the dissemination of Olympism.
Presently, and on the instructions of
the Commission, the Department of
International Cooperation and Development
is collaborating with IOA to encourage the
rest of the NOCs to create NOAs. Funds are
have been made available for the NOCs to
enable them to attend a special session at IOA
during which time will be devoted to issues
relating to support for NOAs and helping
those NOCs that are yet to establish their
own to do so.
