Movie reviews: negotiating values in the EFL classroomThe inscriptions found realize Appreciation, both positive andnegative, in all its subtypes, that is, Valuation, Composition andReaction. The objects of these Appreciations are typically thecharacters of the movie or the movie as an object. We also findJudgment of either positive or negative Capacity generallyevaluating the director or the actors (not the characters). Weobserve that the appraisal resources that realize this overallevaluation of the movie that are used in EFL texts are frequentlysimplified and less varied than those found in authentic texts. We found intensification but not generally infused evaluations. That is, the lexis used to evaluate the different aspects of themovie is prototypical lexis instead of more sophisticated choicessuch as non-core vocabulary (really exciting; not veryconvincing). In relation to Engagement choices, EFL samples show an attemptto familiarize the students with the need to make concessions totemper their criticism (Although some parts are really exciting, Ithink the film is too long) yet, again, the resources used are veryprototypical ones such as conjunctions like ‘although’, 'but' and'however'. In the separate stage Recommendation we found theoptions entertain (I would recommend it) and proclaim (It'sdefinitely worth seeing; It certainly is a must) to conclude apositive review. When the review was rather negative, theresources used to express the Recommendation were those ofdeny and countering (but I can't recommend it). It is worthremembering that authentic reviews do not seem to frequentlyinclude the recommendation as a discrete stage. Therefore, suchdirect assessments of a movie as 'I would recommend it' arerarely found. The following examples illustrate these observations. As done with theauthentic sample texts, the type of inscribed attitude is underlined andindicated between square brackets, while invoked attitude is in italics.Graduation is in bold type. Also, we notice an attempt at creating a spacefor the reviewer’s voice by means of concessive conjunctions and denials, which are italicized:Although some parts are really exciting [+ap: reac] [concession],I think the film is too long [-ap: reac] (187 minutes) [countering].Also some scenes are not very convincing [+ap: reac] [denial].However, most of the special effects are excellent [+ap: reac] and theacting is good [+jud: cap] as well [concession]. Naomi Watts is great[+jud: cap] although King Kong is the real star of the show!ILyCE, FFyL, UNCuyo 41
