An Evaluation ofthe Manukau FamilyLiteracy Programme(New Zealand)2009 Since 1973, AVANCE has helped parents prepare their children for school by focusing on what parents can do during thecritical first three years of their child’s life. Information on brain development indicates a child’s daily environment andexperiences in the infant and toddler years determine the progress of the child’s early development. This is a period whenthe child is totally dependent on the parent yet not all parents recognize the importance of their role. Through itssignature Parent-Child Education Program, AVANCE changes parental knowledge, attitudes, skills and behavior. AVANCEserves primarily Hispanic families in low-income, at-risk communities with a research-proven program model that ispreventative, community-based, two-generation focused and comprehensive in scope. The word AVANCE is a Spanishword meaning “to advance” or “to progress”. In simple terms, this is the goal of all families: “to progress in this world andmake a better life for their children and their family”.2004 The MFLP grew out of an initiative developed in partnership between the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of SocialDevelopment and the Literacy Taskforce of the City of Manukau Education Trust (COMET). The Adult Literacy Strategy 2001prompted an extensive programme of initiatives including the development of innovative approaches to the delivery ofliteracy through the Adult Literacy Innovations Pool. The Tertiary Education Strategy 2002–2007 detailed a priority goal ofraising foundation learning skills so that all people can participate in our knowledge society. It was in the context of thesetwo strategies that work progressed in the development of an innovative family literacy model. Initial planning for theprogrammes was undertaken in 2002, culminating in two pilot sites starting in 2003 at Bairds Mainfreight Primary Schoolin Otara and Rowandale Schools in Manurewa. The Ministry of Education and the Tertiary Education Commission havecontinued funding for COMET’s coordination and the programmes with four sites planned for 2004. Le but de cette recherche est d’améliorer l’enseignement et l’apprentissage dans lesorganismes fournissant des services aux personnes immigrantes qui entreprennent une démarche d’apprentissage en vued’obtenir un emploi, d’atteindre l’autonomie ou d’intégrer une autre formation. Ce rapport donne les résultats d’unsondage provincial mené auprès de quatre centres d’alphabétisation en Ontario et d’un sondage national mené auprès de23 organismes qui oeuvrent en alphabétisation.
