The Roles of Engie with regard to the Lanscape of Demand-Side Management – Pierre Caroff, Loïc Donnay de Casteau, Valentijn Demeyer, Mathilde Catrycke 2 ENGIE’S VIEW ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF DEMAND-SIDE MANAGEMENT To contribute to the growth of DSM and to reach the ambition of becoming a leader in the energy transition, Engie has played an active role in the development of the currently available products for demand response in Belgium, but also in the design of a future system as envisioned by the Transmission System Operator and the national Regulator. Besides this, Engie has also participated in the cross-national working group initiated by the USEF foundation, which aims at the effective implementation of demand aggregation in different market models to deliver an optimal flexibility for all parties. In 2016, Belgium is already a well-developed market when it comes to participation of demand response in balancing (e.g. R3 ICH, R3DP) and adequacy (e.g. Strategic Demand Reserve) markets. However, Engie is convinced that the participation of demand response in those markets, and new ones such as congestion management will continue to increase in the coming years, as a result of the increasing flexibility needs linked to the development of intermittent energy sources. This will be possible through innovative technologies, better knowledge of energy market on customers’ side and their willingness to actively manage their energy consumption and, of course, support from suppliers and aggregators. It is Engie’s opinion, that demand-side management is intrinsically a commercial activity in a liberalized market and that it should not be locked into one specific framework. It should be based on open commercial negotiations between market players. We support the clear definition of roles and responsibilities for more efficiency and further integration of DSM. However, over-regulating the development of this activity will bring market distortions and discriminations on the energy market. Therefore, Engie pleads for simple and efficient processes and a level playing field between the different players and technologies now participating to the flexibility, adequacy and congestion markets. Loïc Donnay de Casteau: Business Developer DSM in the department of Global Energy Management I hold a master degree in Management from Louvain School of Management followed by an additional year at KULeuven. I joined Engie at the end of 2008 and worked in several teams i.e. Forecasting, Sales Portfolio Management, Power Optimization and Trading, and currently as a DSM Business Developer within Global Energy Management. Valentijn Demeyer: Regulatory and Public Affairs Manager in the department of Corporate Belux I graduated from KU Leuven as a master in business engineering in 2010. Following my studies I joined Electrabel in the trading department as a gas dispatcher. Afterwards I moved to the strategy department as a market analyst. In 2016 I joined the Regulatory and Public Affairs department focusing on federal files. Mathilde Catrycke: Regulatory and Public Affairs Manager in the department of Corporate Belux I hold master degrees in management from ICHEC-Brussels Management School and from the University of West Florida. I joined Engie Electrabel in 2010 after I worked for 2 years at UWF as assistant and 1 year in the bank industry. I started in the Marketing & Sales department and joined the Regulatory and Public Affairs team in 2015. I currently hold the position of Manager Regulatory and Public Affairs on federal matters and large projects.
