DEMAND RESPONSE Use and limits in a liberalized electricity market Peter CLAES & Michaël VAN BOSSUYT - FEBELIEC “Electricity markets”, “flexibility”, “demand side response” Summary Résumé Samenvatting In a liberalized electricity market, with more competition, greater system efficiency through better dispatching and lower reserve capacity margins, but also increased market volatility, flexibility in general but demand side response specifically is a very interesting instrument for the electricity system to cope with the highest peaks of the residual load curve, and this at the lowest and most efficient system cost. Moreover, the need for flexibility is exacerbated by the rapid increase of intermittent renewable generation capacity. Dans un marché libéralisé, avec une compétition accrue, une plus grande efficacité du système par biais d’un meilleur dispatching ainsi que de plus faibles marges de capacité de réserve, mais aussi une augmentation de la volatilité de marché, la flexibilité en générale mais la gestion de la demande en spécifique est un outil très intéressant pour le système électrique pour gérer les pointes les plus importantes de la courbe résiduelle de la demande, et ceci au moindre et plus efficace coût de système. Le besoin de flexibilité est encore renforcé par la croissance rapide de la capacité de production intermittente renouvelable. De nood aan flexibiliteit wordt nog versterkt door de snelle toename van intermittente hernieuwbare productiecapaciteit.
