Lithuanization of computers may be divided in two activities: enriching computer alphabet
by Lithuanian alphabet, and translation into Lithuanian of all texts appearing in
the display screen as well as appropriate adaptation. the situation at the end of previous
decade (1991–2000) is presented in short. it may be considered as starting point for the
next decade. Let us note that at this time the problems of Lithuanian alphabet in ordinary
text documents including e-mail theoretically were solved: the code tables were unified, the
standards of code tables and Lithuanian computer keyboard were approved. However the
translation of interface texts was at initial stage.
many practical problems of the usage of Lithuanian alphabet in telecommunications
such as e-mail, instant messages, and sms were left out for the first decade of this century.
mass delivery and usage of outdated and inappropriate for Lithuanian software as well lack
of attention from Lithuanian government side slow down the solution of those problems.
there are some people afraid to use Lithuanian alphabet in sms, or in e-mail headers still
now. Computers in the market are not made up with Lithuanian keyboards.
Lithuanization of user interface run up at this decade. the software of everyday usage
such as operating system microsoft Windows and microsoft office are localized and regularly
updated. a number of educational and other software are localized as well. the Linux
interfaces (kde, gnome, debian, etc.) are at the process of localization. internet package
mozilla and the first versions of its successors mozilla Firefox and mozilla thunderbird
were fully localized. However there are problems with open source software localization:
lack of consistency, localization of a number of programs is not complete. the quality of
most localizations is unsatisfactory.
