In het huidigeStandaardnederlands zijn uitzonderingen op de ‘verb second’-regel altijd gemarkeerd:(2) a V1-constructiesLoop jij eens doorKomen jullie ook?Was het maar zo verZegt die vent ...b V3-constructies[ Dit voorstel ] [echter] achten wij onaanvaardbaar[ Hoe dit ook zij ] [ wij ] kunnen hier niet mee instemmenc Hoofdzinnen ingeleid door een voegwoordDat hij dat durft !De V1-constructies in (2a) lijken sterk op de V2-constructies in (1a-c), waar de eerste constituentniet het subject is; de overeenkomst is de subject-werkwoord-inversie, waardoorhet werkwoord direct vóór het subject staat.
