Textos dos alunos do 9º ano a propósito do tema: “Teens and body image” 28 ENGLISH CORNER It’s not simple to talk about body image. I think body image reflects the way you like to live your life, if you worry too much with it or if you just don’t care. Many people judge others by their looks; if they are fat or slim, short or tall, ugly or beautiful, black or white! I just think that kind of people are crazy and don’t know anything about real life, but unfortunately the world is full of those people. Of course I care a little bit about my appearance but I also know that my real friends aren’t going to like me more, just because of the way I look or don’t look! André Rodrigues, 44/11 Body image is not that much important. It is good to look yourself in a mirror and like what you see but you don’t really need other people’s opinion to feel better. We need to be careful with what we eat and we should be healthy first, then we can say we are fine. Nowadays celebrities influence people, especially teens, but they are who they are and we shouldn’t want to be or try to look like them. I don’t mean that fat or obese people shouldn’t try to change, to take care, and to be helped by doctors and being well advised but always with careful and respect for themselves. Sometimes people make fun of others not knowing how that can be very harmful and totally irresponsible and unfortunately teens do it a lot. In conclusion, the important thing is the way you fell about yourself and the people who truly like you. João Ferreira, 215/11 A persons’ body image is the way people see themselves when they look at the mirror or when someone makes a comment on your looks. The body image is checked by our self-esteem and that should be a positive thing. But some people can’t cope with a criticism and start to develop eating disorders and even serious diseases, like anorexia or bulimia and sometimes causing great damage to their health or even death. Well, of course everyone wants to be fit and healthy and look good; So what can we do to help this people? We can talk to them, make them feel confident with themselves, making them know how important they are to their friends and family. Enzo Morais, 426/12 I think that our body image is important because nowadays people’s appearance is the first thing one sees, but one thing is to take of your body and other completely different is to be obsessed with it. Some teens think their body image is everything but others, like me, care about the inner beauty, the real beauty. All my life, I have learned that we need to develop self-confidence and lead a healthy lifestyle and it’s a shame that some teens just can’t understand that. We need to accept ourselves the way we are, and accept others too. Nobody’s perfect! Rita Esteves, 1011/12 My Favourite Dessert My favourite dessert is chocolate crepes. Chocolate crepes is a delicious dessert made with three eggs, two cups of flour, two cups of milk, one cup of water, three tablespoons of oil, one pinch of salt, oil of a frying pan and two tablespoons of sugar. Chocolate sauce is made with 100 grams of chocolate, two tablespoons of butter, two tablespoons of milk, one tablespoon of sugar and one pinch of vanilla. This recipe is originally from Brittany, a region in the northwest of France, their consumption is widespread in France and Quebec. In Brittany, crepes are traditionally served with cider. Crepes are served with a variety of fillings, from the most simple with only sugar to flambéed Crepes Suzette or elaborate savoury fillings. You should try it. It’s delicious! Mariana Baptista, 2/10, 7º B Our tour of Lisbon Our names are Mariana and Inês. Our ages are twelve and thirteen years old and we live in Lisbon. We are going to take you on a tour of Lisbon. Lisbon is in the middle of Portugal, about 20 kilometres of Sesimbra. Do you know it´s the Europe’s second-oldest capital (after Athens)? First, we are going to take you to visit excellent museums, from the famous Calouste Gulbenkian Museum to the outstanding Ancient Art Museum, and the more recent Design Museum. We can take some photos there. Then, we’re going to walk along the river Tejo and we can learn all about our history and perhaps visit the Belém Tower and the marvelous Jerónimos Monastery. Finally, we’re going to take you to the D. Maria II theatre in the evening. It’s a beautiful, big and old building in Lisbon downtown. We can see a play there. That’s our tour of Lisbon! Being a teenager means discovering who we are, our responsibilities, making choices, our body changes, our feelings…but t also means discovering life, have freedom, fall in love, build our future! We all know that adolescence is possibly the most important time of our lives because the choices that we make when we are teenagers will be reflected in the rest of our lives. Choices like smoking or not, drinking alcohol or not, take drugs or not, what degree we want to take, to chose what we want to be in the future. In conclusion, adolescence is the most important period of our life. What we decide will be determine our future life. Diogo Pinto 120/07 Adolescence is a hard period. Teenagers suffer a lot of physical and psychological changes. They start to know how their boby works. During this period teenagers must make plans for their future life. Teenagers are figuring out who they are, what they believe in, what there are good at, and what their place in the world is going to be. It is a period of time in which teenagers think they know everything, they don’t like to follow rules but besides this desire to feel free they have a lot of responsibilities. Teenagers often suffer peer pressure. They want to belong to a certain group and in order to be accept they make things they don’t feel confortable with such as smoking, drinking, doing drugs which may create adiction. Teenagers must be courageous and fight against these situations. They can make a difference if they are strong enough to be different and mature! Guilherme Ramos220/11 Adolescence is the period in each adolescents choose the future of their lives. In this period, teens can be influenced by their peers who may have a positive or negative influence. It is a time when they choose the job and the skills they must develop in order to have qualifications in the job market and to find the perfect job. It is also the time to choose the friends who they want to have in their lives. The future life depends on the choices and decisions and friendships we have made during this period. The choices and attitudes teens make decide the future and the kind of life they will have. It’s time to make a decision on how the future will be. We conclude that we can define adolescence using these key words: Decisions Choice Physical and psychological changes Peer pressure Friendship Addiction Risks Freedom Responsibilities Plan Future life 29
