The stabilization technique soil nailing has unquestionably guaranteed its place as one
of the principal options available in geotechnical engineering as a result of it popularization in
earthwork applications the world over. The objective of this research project is to summarize
published research in calculation methodologies for this technique as well as gather practical
experience from field observations of the construction of a retaining wall done with soil
nailing in a supermarket project in Salvador and to utilize this information to consolidate a
simple set of procedures that were tested in the supermarket project used as the case study for
the final project of the course. In presenting this case study, a soil retaining wall built on a site
on Santiago de Compostella street, in the neighborhood of Brotas, municipality of Salvador,
the different design elements were appropriately documented with a complete photographic
record, a series of soil profiles to gather information on subsoils, on location rupture tests of
the nailing systems, as well as laboratory tests done with intact samples. Also discussed is
general soil nail retaining wall structural behavior in a review of the technical literature on the
subject covering the origins of soil nailing as a soil strengthening technique, its evolution over
the decades and the different construction methods in use. In the conclusion, comments are
made on the applicability of the calculation methodologies adopted in the case study and
suggestions for the optimization of the construction techniques and performance of soil
nailing.
Key words: soil nailing, retaining walls, design
