1 In the United States and other countries around t h e<br />
w o r l d, t h e 1 9was 6 0 the s decade that made a<br />
difference. I t w as a t of im hope e and, especially, of great<br />
change. When it ended, the world was a very<br />
different p l ace than before.<br />
2 Consider the 1960s in the United States. John F.<br />
Kennedy became president. Martin Luther King, Jr.,<br />
led the Civil Rights movement. Women’s gr o u p s<br />
dem anded eq u al r ig h. tYoung s people listened to new<br />
kinds of music, including the music of the Beatles and<br />
o t h er B r itbands. is h “ippies” ad long air and<br />
wore strange, colorful clothes. They called for peace<br />
ins t ead of war and questioned many of the values of<br />
American society, es p ecial l y the focus on money.<br />
3 In many countries around the world, p eo p l e wanted<br />
the freedom to be themselves and express<br />
themselves. T h ey did nowant t to be limited because they<br />
were women or black or for any other reason.<br />
T h ey wanted everyone to have the same opportunities and<br />

Paris, Amsterdam, and San Francisco were centers<br />
of these new ideas. But many people in other cities and<br />

4 Around the world, people also felt growing concern<br />
for the planet Earth. In Britain, for example, one group<br />
argued for an end to nuclear weapons. This group created<br />
the most famous symbol of t h e 1 9 6 - 0 thepeace s symbol.<br />
People also became more and more concerned about the<br />
effects that humans have on the<br />
environment. In fact, “Earth Day” f ir s t s t ar t ed in 1 9 6 9 .<br />
5 The 1960s was also, of course, a time for technological<br />
advances. A symbol of these advances is the “space race”<br />
between the United States and Soviet Union. At the start<br />
of the decade, in 1961, Russian astronaut Yuri Gagarin<br />
was t h e f ir s t p er in s oouter n space. At its end, in 1969,<br />
American astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin<br />
were t h e f ir s pt<br />
eo p l eto walk on the moon. O v er 500<br />
million people watched the moon w al k on TV - another<br />
