ABSTRACT<br />
ALBERT ECKHOUT AND THE NEW WORLD:<br />
TRANSFORMATION OR REMAINING OF IMAGINARIES?<br />
In the period between the years 1637 and 1644, Maurice of Nassau landed on Brazilian<br />
soil, to occupy the post of governor of Dutch Brazil, and brought under their command<br />
and sponsorship, a delegation of artists and scientists from various parts of Europe that<br />
had function as record the characteristics of the New World. The extensive artistic<br />
production developed by members of the court of Nassau became the main source of<br />
information and images on the Americas as well, through this set of information<br />
references Europe was absorbing and forming a concept about how it would be the New<br />
World and its inhabitants unknown. The painter <strong>Albert</strong> <strong>Eckhout</strong>, with its realistic trait<br />
was considered by scholars to be responsible for transforming the European imagination<br />
about Brazil. We intend, therefore, perceive the influence of art produced by the painter<br />
<strong>Albert</strong> <strong>Eckhout</strong> in shaping the European imagination about distant lands of the New<br />
World and analyze the extent to which his paintings depict faithfully the reality of the<br />
colony and its inhabitants.<br />
