• ENTREVISTA
no Brasil. É mais emocionante por ser em casa? E
casa. A Olimpíada é o título maior do esporte, qualquer
a praticar esportes.
he scene was tense, but of hope. Maracanãzinho (the
T little indoor multisport stadium in Rio de Janeiro next
to the big Maracanão soccer stadium) was jam-packed
to watch the final of the men’s volleyball. The opponents
were the Italians, a team to which we had already lost to
in the qualifying round. The pressure was the size of Brazil
and points were being disputed one by one, but the most
coveted medal finally came, leaving the whole Stadium wild.
It was the third Championship that proved that Brazil is the
Country of Volleyball. On the court, it was a very focused
team with the ability to reinvent every game. A team that plays
together, and full of geniuses. Amongst the protagonists of
the match was Curitiba’s Luiz Felipe Fonteles, or just Lipe, as
he is known. The nickname for a great player. Explosive and
competitive, as he defines himself, he was responsible for the
match point. “It was a blessing to receive the gift of making
the last point and win at the Olympics here at home.” With
an odd humility, Lipe received VOi with open arms. During
the session, he took pictures with every fan who approached
him, he smiled and waved to the honking, and let everyone
who asked put the so dreamed of gold medal around their
neck, after all it belongs to all Brazilians, who believed in the
historic achievement. Lipe proved in the interview why he
deserves to be in the elite of Brazilian volleyball, which you
can read below. Check out the interview!
Não estava 100% clinicamente. Como é jogar contundido?
Sentiu dor? Em algum momento achou que não seria
possível chegar no final?
mim. Treinava, mas quando percebiam a exaustão, eles me
tiravam para que não sobrecarregasse as articulações. A paciência
influiu de alguma forma no time masculino?
First, I want to ask you what it’s like to win at the Olympics
in Brazil. Is it more exciting because it’s at home? And how
does it feel to make the game point?
The emotions are very strong and come all at once. There’s no
way to describe in one word what it was like winning at the
Olympics. It completely made my career worthwhile, which
has always been a struggle and filled with difficulty, because
I have suffered many injuries, with three knee surgeries. It
was a blessing to receive the gift of making game point and
winning here at home. The Olympics is the biggest sporting
title, every athlete dreams of playing on a winning team, so it
is something incredible. The moment was the happiest in my
career and hopefully serves as a motivation for many children
to start playing sports.
Your best performance in the Olympics was in the match
against France, in the first phase, a game in which losing
would mean goodbye. What happened in that game?
All our training was preparation to be able to face any situation.
I was prepared and that moment was the one when
the team felt the most pressure. I was able to play calmly
because I knew that I was prepared technically to play at
my best and aggressively. It was independent whether we
won or not, I knew my responsibility would be to play my
very best at that time.
