PIRACICABA PRESENTATION AND PROFILE
From agriculture to industrialization: a
history of success and growth
With a name of tupi origin, that means “the place
where the fish stops”, Piracicaba was born on the river
banks that give name to the city. Located just over 150
kilometres from the city of São Paulo, it is the main
municipality of its metropolitan region, and occupies
an extensive area of 1,378 km² and population of more
than 400 thousand habitants.
Piracicaba was founded in 1767 and over the 19th
century had its development marked by agriculture,
with emphasis on the cultivation of sugarcane and
coffee. In the first half of the 20th century, the city went
into decline with the end of the coffee cycle and the
constant fall in sugar prices.
Economic recovery took place with the beginning
of its industrialization. Piracicaba became one of the
first to industrialize in the country, with the opening of
manufacturing plants linked to the mechanical sector
and equipment for sugar production. This activity
expanded from the 70’s to the sugar and ethanol/alcohol
sector, with the creation of the Pro-Alcohol Program.
Currently, it is an industrialized city considered
a benchmark in the sugar and ethanol/alcohol sector,
dedicated to the production of hydrated alcohol for
automotive use. It maintains important companies in
various sectors, which guarantees its prominence in
the economy. In addition, its Human Development
Index ranks high in the United Nations Development
Program (UNDP) and its quality of life is always in
evidence.
