The Electronic Monitoring System is a grouping of<br />
the <strong>Piracicaba</strong> Municipal Civil Guard, installed in the<br />
Civic Centre, with the function to aim at monitoring<br />
and electronic support of occurrences and approaches,<br />
traffic accidents, patrol security, location of suspicious<br />
vehicles, in addition to curbing acts of vandalism<br />
and possible criminal attitudes. The Cemel (electronic<br />
monitoring centre) monitors more than 120 cameras<br />
spread across the central area, neighbourhoods, cemetery,<br />
parks and busiest public spaces.<br />
Homicides in decline<br />
The homicide rate in <strong>Piracicaba</strong> varied from 13.3<br />
to 10.1 per 100,000 habitants between 2009 and<br />
2019. In the past year, the city had a rate lower than<br />
the average of the 100 largest municipalities in Brazil,<br />
occupying the 28th best position in the ranking. The<br />
number of homicides in <strong>Piracicaba</strong> went from 49 in<br />
2009 to 41 in 2019, a variation of -16.3% in the<br />
