as seed yield, LG5580, PR63F73, Tunca and PR64H34 hybrids were existed at rst
ranks respectively in the trials. Of course, susceptible hybrids were existed at last ranks
due to heavy broomrape infestations in these areas. When comparing of oil content
of sun ower hybrids in these trials, 08-TR-003 hybrids from Trakya ARE existed in
rst rank as 52% and DKF-2525, 08-TR-004, NX 53938, 05-TR-198, LG 5400, and
Tunca hybrids followed it respectively (Table 2). Oil content and oil yield of hybrids
get importance in recent years because Trakya Birlik which is the main buyer in Turkey
started to purchase sun ower seed based on oil content of seeds.
Very successful results are obtained also in National Sun ower Breeding Program
conducted by TARI in recent years. Three of sun ower hybrids from TARI exhibited
at the highest oil contents among the sun ower hybrids in the registration trials. On the
other hand, very higher seed and oil yielding hybrids which are both oleic and linoleic
type and also were broomrape resistant were developed in 2010. Linoleic type hybrids
existed in rst ranks was given in Table 3. Many of them had higher oil yield than
DKF-2525 and TUNCA hybrids which are the highest oil content in the market and
had the highest market share in Turkey. On the other hand, broomrape resistant and
oleic type hybrids were developed also by TARI in 2010 and some of them are given
in Table 4.
After these successful results in 2010, 5 linoleic and 3 oleic type sun ower hybrids
are sent to Registration Trials by TARI and production permission for duration of
the registration trials were taken to all of them. 5 of them are broomrape resistant for
Trakya region and other 3 hybrids are non resistant for Anatolian part of Turkey which
are not broomrape problem areas.
Broomrape tests were conducting both in arti cial and natural infested conditions in
National Sun ower Project by TARI. Total 626 genetic materials including experimental
hybrids, restorer and female inbred lines were tested in Malkara County which is one
of most infested area with new races of broomrape in Trakya Region in 2010. 524
materials were found as resistant and 102 of them were observed as susceptible.
Broomrape tests also were conducting in arti cial conditions in growth chamber
mainly in during winter season. Tests were conduction in the pots and plant roots were
soaked and cleaned then were counted broomrape number attached to sun ower plant
roots. 2706 genetic materials were tested in 2010 and 2011 winter season in TARI and
most of them were found as resistant (Table 5).
On the other hand, these resistant inbred lines also were exchanged with many
private companies both in Turkey and also abroad to produce joint hybrids in recent
years. These joint hybrids and female lines were found as resistant to new races of
broomrape also in Spain, Bulgaria, Romania, and Russia. In results of successful
bilateral collaboration, one joint hybrid with Maisador Seed Co. from France sent to
registration trials in Italy in 2011. Additionally, from a bilateral project with Szeged
Institute in Hungary, 2 joint hybrids were registered in Romania, one of them is in
registration trials in Ukraine and 2 broomrape resistant sun ower hybrids were sent to
registration trials in Romania again and one joint hybrid was sent to Turkey registration
trials in this year too.
