7. Hjärtkärlsjukdom<br />

Bakgrund<br />

Hjärtsjukdomar utgör en av de vanligaste dödsorsakerna idag och det finns en klar koppling<br />

mellan hjärtsjukdom och övervikt (tabell 1) visat i en stor amerikansk studie med drygt 16<br />

000 deltagare representativt valt ur befolkningen (1). Risken att utveckla hypertoni, höga<br />

kolesterol nivåer och hjärtsjukdom ökade med 2.3, 0.7 respektive 1.5 gånger hos kvinnor och<br />

3.0, 1.3 respektive 2.2 gånger hos män under en tioårsperiod vid BMI ≥35 kg/m 2 (2). Kraftigt<br />

överviktiga har även en hög risk <strong>för</strong> att utveckla typ 2 diabetes med höga blodsockernivåer.<br />

Detta tillsammans med högt blodtryck och <strong>för</strong>höjda blodfetter utgör tillsammans de största<br />

riskfaktorerna <strong>för</strong> att utveckla hjärtkärlsjukdom.
