The workshop providedan opportunity to experience team workingwith people from different countries and withdifferent disciplines. However for a team towork effectively its members need to ‘gel’:just look at any successful team in an f1 pitlane, on the football pitch or in delivering anew building. bad teams are often a set ofindividuals whereas a good team is greater thanthe sum of its parts… or team members. sohow to facilitate the ‘Gardens of Art’ workshopteams? some students were already friendswhilst others had travelled from other countriesand hadn’t even visited wrocław before.we needed to create teams on Day 1 and givethem the best chance of getting to know eachother – fast.we selected teams to ensure we had a mixof skills and nationalities, and as far as wecould judge an appropriate mix of individualcharacteristics – based on their ‘personal skills’which are described below.TEAM BUILDING EVENTMASTERS OF CEREMONYHEAD MASTERANTHONY CLERICISIMPLE MASTERSIZABELA MIRONOWICZ & PAWEŁ HAWRYLAKHELPING AS ‘UNKNOWN STRANGERS’WROCŁAW BEAUTIFICATION ASSOCIATIONWROCŁAW CYCLING INITIATIVEwe collected everyone together at theArt Gallery ‘design’ where the teams wereannounced. some of the tutors were sent byMexican Taxi (real green old vw!) into the city(once the taxi had negotiated access with thecity police!). Then the fun began… each teamreceived instructions to find a tutor, meanwhilethe tutors hung around in squares and oncorners waiting with further sealed instructions.so after a relatively easy orienteering exercisethey were found and the secret instructionsopened… there were instructions and rope. The rope was for tying teams together and theinstructions gave another destination in thecity to meet an unknown stranger. The teamswere by now spread across the city centre, hobbling across roads, holding up traffic andtalking, negotiating and laughing.Meanwhile let’s not forget that the tutorswere going to experience similar issues to thestudents; they didn’t know each other, werefrom different universities and practices. Theyhad instructions to go to another courtyardwhere they too were tied together and givena new destination to find. so, back to thestudents, who had by now found members ofwrocław’s beautification society who handedthem yet another envelope which directedthem to don Quixote – a street sculpturelocated in the street. during the evening wehad asked the teams to agree on their ownteam name…As the evening developed the teams beganto arrive at the don Quixote’s statue oppositeto ‘The Mexican’ Restaurant. The first teamback danced around celebrating whilstothers hobbled into szewska to the finish. wecollected the team names: Team Teapot, BUT,Magnificent 7+1, ‘Allo ‘Allo! and Free Team. The finale was drinks and food in the restaurant:we had our teams, they all knew each otherand we could look forward to a good start thefollowing morning.later in the week we ran ‘the quickest evergroup personality questionnaire’ thatasked two questions which led to identifyingthe ‘drivers’, ‘analytical’, ‘expressives’ and‘amiables’ in each team. we discussed theirtraits, how they operated and how differentcharacters are essential to good team working. There were even clues as to how peoplechange their personalities when stressed orwhen confronting ‘change’. To some it was arevelation that helped in understanding theirown place and why other team membersbehaved as they did.The team building exercise gave added valueto the workshop: soft skills are essential whenworking in teams and for me the presentationsat the end of the workshop demonstratedhow far the teams had developed in such ashort time.ASKFORMALMEASURED AND SYSTEMATICSEEK ACCURACY & PRECISIONDISLIKES UNPREDICTABILITY AND SURPRISESCONFORMINGLESS RUSHED AND EASY GOINGSEEKS APPRECIATIONDISLIKES INSENSITIVITY AND IMPATIENCEFACTSANALYTICAL DRIVERANALYSES ACTIVATORAMIABLE ExPRESSIVEAFFILIATOR CONCEPTUALISTFEELINGSTHEY COMPLEMENT BECAUSE:// ANALYST NEEDS ExPRESSIVE TO THINK FOR THE FUTURE AND INPUT RADICAL IDEAS// ExPRESSIVE NEEDS ANALYST TO REMIND THEM OF FACTS AND BE REALISTIC// DRIVER NEEDS AMIABLE TO GET FRONT-LINE OWNERSHIP// AMIABLE NEEDS DRIVER TO GET TOUGH AND GET RESULTSNOT ENOUGH INFORMATIONMAKING A WRONG DECISIONBEING FORCED TO DECIDEDAMAGED RELATIONSHIPSCONFRONTATIONSNOT BEING RECOGNISED FOR EFFORTSPERSONAL STYLESFEARS ABOUT CHANGEANALYTICAL DRIVERANALYSES ACTIVATORAMIABLE ExPRESSIVEAFFILIATOR CONCEPTUALISTIN CONFLICT:// ANALYST FINDS ExPRESSIVE IMPRACTICAL AND DIFFICULT TO FOLLOW// ExPRESSIVE FINDS ANALYST PEDANTIC AND PESSIMISTIC// DRIVER FINDS AMIABLE ILLOGICAL AND EMOTIONAL// AMIABLE FINDS DRIVER CRITICAL AND INSENSITIVEBUSINESS LIKEFAST AND DECISIVESEEK CONTROLDISLIKES INEFFICIENCY OR INDECISIONFLAMBOYANTFAST AND SPONTANEOUSSEEK RECOGNITIONDISLIKES ROUTINE AND BOREDOMLOSS OF CONTROLFAILURELACK OF PURPOSEBEING IGNOREDBEING ASKED FOR DETAILBEING LINKED WITH FAILUREWHEN IN A TEAM I KNOW THAT I…NEED A DRIVER TO FINISH OR A DEADLINEI’M ALWAYS SUSPICIOS OF ANALYTICALS BECAUSE THEY KEEP ON ASKING STUPID DETAILS QUESTIONSI LIKE AMIABLES BECAUSE THEY’LL TAKE ME TO THE PUBI CAN BOUNCE IDEAS OFF THE OTHER ExRESSIVES.TELL7273maj/czerwiec 201097
