16. Letters of R’ Elazar
Shach
Three letters from R’ Elazar Menachem Man Shach, Rosh
Yeshivah of Ponovezh Yeshivah. The letters are from 1978.
Two of the letters are in his handwriting with his signature,
and the third was typed on a typewriter with an addition in his
handwriting and with his signature.
The letters are in reference to a question asked by important
educators in United States concerning the education of boys
and girls. The question was in which language to teach
i n American schools: Yiddish, English, or Hebrew ( Lashon
H akodesh)
. Here, the Rosh Yeshivah revealed his opinion to
differentiate between girls’ and boys’ education. In the third
letter, he reiterates the opinion he asserts in the first two letters
in greater detail and explanation, and he was careful to type it on
a typewriter. It appears that the Rosh Yeshivah was concerned
that his position in the first two letters would not be completely
understood, and he therefore clarified his views in detail in
the third typed letter. Each letter is accompanied by a mailing
envelope with the handwritten name of the sender.
Important collection that brings to light the opinion of one of
the great leaders of the generation on a currently applicable
topic.

שלושה מכתבים מר'‏ אלעזר מנחם מן שך,‏ ראש ישיבת פוניבז'.‏
המכתבים משנת תשל"ח שניים מהם בכתב ידו עם
חתימתו,‏ והמכתב השלישי במכונת כתיבה עם הוספה בכתב ידו
ובחתימתו.‏
המכתבים עוסקים בשאלה,‏ שהופנתה מממחנכים חשובים
בארצות הברית,‏ בענין חינוך הבנים והבנות.‏ השאלה היתה באיזו
שפה ללמד בבתי הספר בארצות הברית,‏ ביידיש,‏ באנגלית או
בלשון הקודש.‏ כאן גילה הראש הישיבה את דעתו לחלק בין
לימוד הבנים,‏ ללימוד הבנות.‏ במכתב השלישי חוזר על דעתו
בשני מכתבים הראשונים ביתר אריכות וביאור,‏ והקפיד להדפיסו
במכונת כתיבה.‏ כנראה דאג ראש הישיבה שדעתו כפי שהובעה
בשני המכתבים הראשונים לא תובן במלואה,‏ ולכן חזר על דבריו
בהרחבה ובביאור,‏ ובדפוס.‏ לכל מכתב מצורפת מעטפת דואר עם
שם השולח בכתב יד.‏
