Essays on the importance and virtues of the Land of Israel and
Jerusalem, including a guide to the holy places by [R’ Chaim
Horowitz]. Published by Rabbi Mordechai Bar Cohen a Magid
Mesharim in Suwalki. (Jerusalem) [actually Koenigsberg, 1858].
[2], 64 leaves, 20.5 cm.
This book, originally published in Jerusalem, was imitated
and published apparently in Lemberg, in the year 1870
approximately. On the title page: Jerusalem. See S. HaLevi,
Sifrei Yerushalaim HaRishonim No. 23. This particular copy
is a different imitation which is perfect, with no changes
and the same pagination as the Jerusalem edition, unlike the
Lemberg publication where a few changes were made including
a different pagination.
Very good condition, beautiful, leather binding.

השער"‏ בסוף ‏(עפ"י ש.‏ הלוי).‏
במצב מצויין,‏ עם שוליים נאים.‏ עם כריכת עור מקורית מפוארת.‏

F irst edition. I ncluded is the responsa by R’ Zvi Hersh
Kalisher, on the subject of offering up sacrifises nowadays,
and a responsa about entering temple mount in our days.

Israel’s virtues, by R’ David Ben Shimon. Jerusalem, Bak press.
1862. 203 leaves, 32 cm.
Includes 613 paragraphs of praise for the land of Israel, its
v irtues and segulot. F irst edition. The author R’ David Ben
Shimon (Dvas”h) was born in Morocco, settled in Jerusalem
in 1855 and became rabbi of the Ma’aravim community
(Moroccans and Algerians) in Jerusalem. On the cover the name
“Chaim Mashiach” is embossed. He was one of the leaders
of the “Chovevei Zion” committee of the Bukharian Jews in
J erusalem. O n leaf 195 is a picture of Jerusalem. Like in most
other copies “Ulam HaSha’ar” is lacking at the end (according
to S. HaLevi).
Excellent condition, large margins. Original, beautiful,
l eather binding. Margins of title page were slightly restored.
