I can exchange opinions with other people.
1 Look at the photo. What are the posters
campaigning against?
2 1.37 Listen to the dialogue. Which poster

Marie Hi, Dean. Have you seen these?
Dean No, what are they?
Marie They’re posters for an anti-drugs campaign.
All the students in the school have to say
which one’s best, and why.
Dean Oh, OK. Well, that one’s only got text. To be
really effective, it should definitely have a
photo. What do you think?
Marie I can’t really decide, but I suppose the one
with the photo has got a clearer message.
Do you agree?
Dean I’m not sure about that. I reckon it should be
more positive. Of course the message must
be clear, but it shouldn’t try to scare us.
Marie Mmm. You might be right.

4 Look at sentences 1–5 and read the rules. Then
change the words in blue using your own ideas.
1 You shouldn’t smoke. It’s dangerous.
2 You mustn’t take drugs. It’s illegal.
3 You don’t have to diet. It isn’t healthy.
4 You have to give your opinion.
5 The message should be clearer.
5 Work in pairs. Talk about opinions 1–4. Use the
key phrases in exercise 3.
1 We have to use animals to test drugs.
2 We mustn’t create clones of humans.
3 Drugs should be made legal.
4 Cigarettes must be made illegal.
6 ACTIVATE Look at the anti-smoking posters.
Prepare a new dialogue about the posters
with a partner. Use the adjectives in the box
and the key phrases in exercise 3. Practise
your dialogue. Then change roles.
