Defining relative clauses<br />

1 Read the rules and find examples for each rule<br />

in the All about me profile on page 72.<br />

RULES<br />

1 We can use the relative pronouns who,<br />

which and where when we refer to people,<br />

things and places.<br />

2 We can use that instead of who and which.<br />

3 We can use whose for possession.<br />

4 We put prepositions at the end of a<br />

relative clause.<br />

Match sentences 1–5 with rules a and b.<br />

1 Wendy Nichols, who is from London<br />

University, is a phobia psychologist.<br />

2 You meet people who’ve had similar problems.<br />

3 I just keep away from places where there are<br />

a lot of people.<br />

4 I was supposed to go to Barcelona, where I<br />

had a meeting, but I couldn’t board the plane.<br />

5 Ben, whose job includes travelling, has a<br />

phobia of flying.<br />

RULES<br />

a A defining relative clause gives important<br />

information about the noun. The sentence<br />

doesn’t make sense without this clause.<br />

b A non-defining relative clause gives extra<br />

information about a noun. The sentence<br />

makes sense without this clause. We don’t<br />

use that with these clauses.<br />

5 Combine the two sentences to make one<br />

sentence. Use a non-defining relative clause<br />

with who, which, where and whose.<br />

Tom plays basketball brilliantly. He’s very tall.<br />

Tom, who’s very tall, plays basketball brilliantly.<br />

1 Marc speaks French. His dad comes from Paris.<br />

2 My sister sings in a band. She lives in Dublin.<br />

3 Last summer, I visited Ireland. My father was<br />

born there.<br />

4 I can’t find my new coat. I bought it last week.<br />

5 My uncle has got a yacht. He’s very rich.<br />

6 Jan works for a big company. It makes toys.<br />

6 ACTIVATE Write five sentences about famous<br />

people. Then read them to your partner for<br />

them to add extra information.<br />

The Queen of England lives in Buckingham Palace.<br />

The Queen of England, who has met<br />

Lady Gaga, lives in Buckingham Palace.<br />
