98 oberlausitz Wir pflegen Weltkultur. Auf der Karte der UNESCO-Welterbestätten in Deutschland ist Sachsen fast ganz weiß – aber eben nur fast: Upper Lusatia likes to host guests from around the world – and has much to offer them. For example, the Muskau Park as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This recognized brand is a global award which entails numerous opportunities and advantages for the region and makes us proud. On the map depicting the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Germany, Saxony is almost a complete blank spot – well, almost: +++ www.oberlausitz.com +++ www.oberlausitz.com +++ www.oberlausitz.com +++ www.oberlausitz.com +++ foto: stiftung „fürst-Pückler-Park bad Muskau“
More than 150 gardens and parks surrounding palaces, castles, manors, and estates define and characterize the green landscape of Upper Lusatia. These witnesses of a horticultural tradition which has evolved over centuries provide a hint of how the Upper Lusatian aristocracy once used to live. As Saxony’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Fürst Pückler Park in Bad Muskau assumes a singular position. The 830 hectare estate with its sweeping expanse of broad meadows is a unique horticultural work of art which the eccentric genius Hermann Fürst von Pückler-Muskau created between 1815 and 1845. Bad Muskau has also polished its image as a health spa town – a development with potential, as the County Supervisor of Görlitz County, Bernd Lange, points out. Mr. Lange, much has already been invested into the health spa town bad Muskau over the past couple of years. What are the plans for health tourism? 2001 saw the successful drilling of the thermal saline well in Bad Muskau. With this thermal saline well, which has a mineral composition similar to that of the Dead Sea, and the iron vitriol spring as well as the Altteich spa mud baths, the city now has three local therapeutic sources. That’s unique. Until 2009, the former gentlemen’s Kavalierhaus functioned as the central spa house offering mud baths in the Fürst Pückler Park. When the new Kulturhotel Fürst Pückler, which is operated by the private Moorbad Bad Muskau Beteiligungs GmbH corporation, opened its doors in 2009, it assumed that function for the city. In addition to the Altteich spa mud baths, the thermal saline water will now also be used in special bathtubs for medical and therapeutic purposes. We’re currently evaluating the planned additional investment into larger bodies of water. bernd Lange, Landrat des Landkreises görlitz county supervisor of görlitz county Upper Lusatia how can you integrate these measures into the World heritage site? With the Fürst Pückler Park, the city of Bad Muskau is currently the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Free State of Saxony: A sweeping, beautiful landscape park which attracts nearly 300,000 tourists to Bad Muskau every year. The tourism season is, though, only limited to the months April through October. By building another central spa house and/or a thermal saline spa, there is a realistic possibility to extend the tourist season to twelve months. And the city of Bad Muskau has also gotten more attractive during the past couple of years. Investments were made primarily into the infrastructure, roads and sidewalks as well as the entire supply and disposal system renewed, the marketplace redesigned, and a new primary-level school built. These measures were always coordinated early on with the Saxon State Office for the Preservation of Historic Landmarks, the responsible monitor of the UNESCO as well as the Fürst Pückler Park Foundation. This helped assure compatibility with the World Heritage Site. For many years now, the Federal Government and the Free State of Saxony have been investing proportionally into the park itself to renovate the new palace, reopen the English Bridge, and numerous other measures. The special exhibition “Pückler – Catch Him if You Can” offers guests the perfect program to round it all off. The next infrastructural measure to be undertaken is the construction of a parking garage or park deck in Bad Muskau. Municipal properties have already been set aside for this project. Anyone familiar with the parking situation in the city will know how important this is. Where and how can private investors participate in these developments? The City of Bad Muskau wishes to create the best possible general conditions and prerequisites for private investors and to support investments. Every investor is cordially welcome.
