Saxony’s Mechanical Engineering Network VEMAS
Saxon Industry Focuses on Russia
Russia’s economy is growing continuously. Russian companies have to rapidly
modernize their production so that they can supply the domestic market
and export their goods. This need has become even more pressing through
the modernization campaign proclaimed by President Medvedev.
Continuity Pays Off
For many years now, the Saxon economy has been continuing the decade long
tradition of close cooperation with Russia while benefiting from the current
trends. An important partner in this is Saxony’s Mechanical Engineering Network
VEMAS which, as an initiative launched by the Free State, assists and
supports machine and plant construction enterprises seeking to enter and
establish themselves on the market with its comprehensive portfolio. Since
its founding in 2003, future-oriented technologies and markets have been
the initiative’s primary fields of action. That is why VEMAS has established a
comprehensive and superb network of representatives from the business and
scientific communities as well as government. In India, for example, which is
another target market of VEMAS, it was possible to create a dense network
of contacts encompassing more than 300 decision makers from industry, the
research environment as well as governmental authorities.
In Russia, VEMAS assists numerous activities in close cooperation with the official
representatives of Saxony’s business community in Russia and the Sax-
ony Economic Development Corporation (WFS). These activities range from
the competent organization of joint trade show booths to technological
forums all the way to entrepreneurial trips. For example, VEMAS presented
itself at a joint booth together with 16 Saxon enterprises, R&D facilities and
institutions at this year’s “Metalloobrabotka,” the leading exhibition for metal
processing and metal working, in Moscow. With the support of the Russian
Forum, which was held during Leipzig’s twin fair intec/Z 2011, Saxony’s cooperation
with its Russian partners is enhanced even here in Germany.
In order to sustainably promote the foreign trade activities of enterprises,
VEMAS is actively involved in various economic work groups with the Rus-

German side supports these activities politically through participation by
the Saxon State Government and the Saxon State Ministry for Economic Affairs,
Labour and Transportation (SMWA) in entrepreneurial trips.
Success through Networking
When it comes to fostering the strategic cooperation among Saxon enterprises,
VEMAS creates and maintains branch-specific networks. The networks
“Engine and Transmission Manufacturing” and “Toolmaking and
Mold Construction” are already well established. The cooperative alliance
“Plastic Technologies for the Russian Construction Industry” was launched
in 2010; this year, the research marketing project “Efficient Technologies
to Modernize Production in Russia (EMPRu),” which was launched by the
Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), commenced with its
work. Technological forums on specific subjects address Russian customers
in the automobile, aviation, and space industries, machine construction as
well as the construction branch.
Region-related technological forums which are designed to introduce Saxony’s
abilities and capabilities such as, for example, the ones held in the
Ural region of Sverdlovsk in July 2011 and in St. Petersburg and Moscow in
October 2011 create a lot of interest among small and midsized enterprises.
