Saxony Automotive Supplier Network (AMZ)
All Geared Up for the Future
The automobile of the future will be increasingly propelled by electric power.
The transition to e mobility can be a catalyst for continuous growth for the
about 750 suppliers, equipment and service providers in Saxony. They all possess
the technical competences to develop this future-oriented field for themselves.
This is the result of an expert’s report compiled by the Saxony Automotive
Supplier Network (AMZ). The initiative, which is headed by the RKW
Sachsen GmbH corporation, has examined the opportunities and risks of the
transition to e mobility for automobile value creation in Saxony on behalf of the
Saxon State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Labour and Transportation (SMWA).
E driving in diverse variations ranging from hybrid concepts to all-electric automobiles
not only requires specific energy storages and electric engines. The
proportion of power electronics and energy management systems will actually
increase significantly. Gearboxes and transmissions need to be redesigned
completely. And new vehicle body concepts are also necessary for electric cars.
Modern Technologies
AMZ expert’s report clearly demonstrates that Saxony possesses substantial
strong points in several of the future-oriented fields outlined above.
With modern technologies in metal processing, the supply industry is well
equipped for the new demands and requirements in gearbox production.
The available competences in metal and plastics processing are also perfectly
suited for the development of lightweight construction and vehicle
body concepts. With institutes and professorships at the TU Dresden [Dresden
University of Technology] and Chemnitz University of Technology as
well as the multifaceted Fraunhofer community, the Free State is a global
leader with its expertise in research.
Saxon suppliers have also gained considerable strength in the electronics
sector. Here, they already cover entire value creation chains for the devel-

opment and production of complete systems. Together with the respective
competences in the plastics and metal sectors, this results in the best possible
prerequisites when it comes to establishing value creation for such
key components as lithium ion batteries, e machines, and general vehicle
electrification. That this is the right concept is aptly demonstrated by such
companies as, for example, Li Tec Battery and Deutsche Accumotive in Kamenz,
the HOPPECKE Battery Research Centre in Zwickau, or the electric
engine manufacturer VEM motors Thurm GmbH.
Saxon System Competence
In addition, such engineering service providers as the Zwickau-based corporations
FES GmbH Fahrzeug Entwicklung Sachsen and Auto-Entwicklungsring
Sachsen GmbH or the Chemnitz Development Center of the IAV
GmbH corporation all focus their comprehensive knowledge in e mobility
and provide substantial competences which reach all the way to the complete
vehicle. Another positive aspect is the high density of networks among
commercial enterprises as well as between business and science which has
resulted in the emergence of regional centers for major automobile fields of
competence.
Saxon system competence is represented by such electrically propelled
vehicles as, for example, the Trabant nT or the vehicles made by e poché
which are equipped with in-house Saxon battery management solutions.
The new Melkus RS2000 will also be available with an electric engine. AMZ
brought together the right partners for all of these projects. For AMZ, it is
important to continue focusing the knowledge and capacities so that system
competence will be further expanded and the opportunities resulting from
the transition to e mobility can be transformed into market success.
