Welcome Address from the President
Dear Colleagues, Honoured Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am very pleased to welcome you to the 109th DOG-Congress
in Berlin!
Congress and Hotel at One Location
The upcoming Congress will be hosted for the third time by
Estrel Berlin. This venue has shown itself to be an ideal location
thanks to its more than 2,000 hotel beds, its large number of
meeting rooms and exhibition spaces, and its excellent infrastructure.
Challenges in Ophthalmology
Diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of our specialty will be comprehensively
elucidated under this motto. This applies to the
’cutting edges’ in clinical and research work, to current health
economic challenges, as well as to the field of education.
Clarity and Efficiency – A New Structure for Our Programs
Our top priority in program planning is to make the Congress as
valuable as possible. ’Less is more’ – more timely, sharper focus,
greater clarity. We have therefore limited ourselves to five meeting
threads and two intensive course threads so that all participants
will have the opportunity to learn as much as possible in the focal
points of their interests. All meeting threads will start at the same
time with a general duration of 90 minutes. Each topic has been
assigned its own auditorium, which means that mostly all sessions
on one topic will take place in the same room.
Proven Traditions and Cutting Edge
As in each year, the symposia are the backbone of our Congress.
Current topics in each ophthalmological focal point are presented
and critically scrutinized in these symposia. Numerous abstracts
have been summarized in Free Paper Sessions and Poster Sessions.
A big variety of courses, many of them held for the first time,
complete the program.
We would like to draw your attention to the Keynote Lectures and
the von Graefe Lecture as well as on the symposium on Health and
Research Politics and Economics on Friday with important politi -
cians like Rainer Brüderle, Chairman of the parliamentary group
FDP and Doris Ahnen, Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Science
and Culture of Rheinland-Pfalz.
Focus on the Poster Sessions
We devote special attention to the poster meetings by giving them
exclusive placement in the program and by offering moderated poster
tours. In 36 poster sessions more than 338 posters will be presented
and discussed. To stress the importance of the poster sessions,
there will be no parallel events during the daily poster sessions.
International Symposia Enable International Exchange
Following our tradition, the congress will offer numerous possibilities
for knowledge sharing and active communication among hospital
doctors, ophthalmologists in private practice, scientists, students,
and industry representatives. In accordance with its tradition, the
Congress is also internationally oriented. Many sessions will be
organized in cooperation with European and international scientific
societies, so we especially welcome the numerous experts from
throughout Europe and overseas.
