(1) Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht!
Alles schläft, einsam wacht
nur das traute hochheilige Paar,
„Holder Knabe im lockigen Haar,
schlaf in Himmlischer Ruh’,
schlaf in himmlischer Ruh’!“
(2) Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht!
Gottes Sohn, o wie lacht
Lieb’ aus deinem göttlichen Mund,
da uns schlägt die rettende Stund’:
Christ, in deiner Geburt.
Durch der Engel Halleluja
Am Vormittag des Heiligen Abends 1818 in
Oberndorf in der Nähe von Salzburg zeigte
Mohr den Text seinem Freund, dem im benachbarten
Arnsdorf lebenden Lehrer Franz Gruber
(* 1787 † 1863), der die Melodie für die
Gitarre komponierte, da die Orgel nicht funktio-
62
nierte.
Engl.: Silent Night, is deemed the world’s most
famous Christmas carol (jWeihnachtslied). Only in
more recent times was the curate and later vicar
Joseph Mohr (* 1792 † 1848) identified as the author
of the lyrics of the song:
(1) Silent Night! Holy Night! / All is calm, all is
bright / Round yon godly tender pair / Holy infant
with curly hair / Sleep in heavenly peace / Sleep in
heavenly peace. (2) Silent Night! Holy Night! / Son
of God, love’s pure light Radiant beams from thy
holy face / With the dawn of redeeming grace / Jesus,
Lord at thy birth / Jesus, Lord at thy birth. (3) Silent
Night! Holy Night! / Brought the world gracious
light / Down from heaven’s golden height / Comes to
us the glorious sight: / Jesus, as one of mankind /
Jesus, as one of mankind. (4) Silent Night! Holy
Night! / By his love, by his might / God our Father
us has graced / As a brother gently embraced / Jesus,
all nations on earth / Jesus, all nations on earth. (5)
Silent Night! Holy Night! / Long ago, minding our
plight / God the world from misery freed / In the
dark age of our fathers decreed: / All the world is
redeemed / All the world is redeemed. (6) Silent
Night! Holy Night! / Shepherds first saw the sight /
Of angels singing alleluia / Calling clearly near and
far: / Christ, the savior is born / Christ the Savior is
born.
On the morning of Christmas Eve in 1818 in Oberndorf
close to Salzburg Mohr showed the lyrics to his
friend, the tutor Franz Gruber (* 1787 † 1863) living
in the neighboring Arnsdort, who composed the
melody for the guitar since the organ was not working.
The song premiered a few hours later during
Christmas Mass (jChristmette) with the members
of a group of peasant singers at the Oberndorf church
and ever since has its fixed place among the top ten of
German Christmas carols (jWeihnachtslieder).
