Schnicke will have completed his dissertation in about two years.
Sarah Speck will complete her empirical study of the SOS
mothers as early as summer 2011. For her research, she spent several
months in SOS Children’s Villages in Austria and Bolivia,
observing how the supposedly universal model of family and
motherhood operates in two diff erent cultural contexts. »Being a

Im Graduiertenkolleg »Geschlecht als Wissenskategorie«
wird auf der Grundlage von
Wissensgeschichte und Wissenstheorie zu folgenden
zwei Schwerpunkten gearbeitet: »Die
Interrelation von Geschlechter- und Wissensordnung«
sowie die »Geschlechtliche Codierung
von Wissensobjekten und sozialem Körper«.
Die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinscha�
(DFG) hat die Laufzeit des Graduiertenkollegs
mit höchster Förderpriorität bis 2013 verlängert.
Derzeit werden 18 Graduierte über die
DFG und elf Doktoranden über assoziierte Programme
gefördert, darunter Kultur- und Geschichtswissenscha�
ler, Medizingeschichtler,
Pädagogen, Theologen, Rechtswissenscha� ler
sowie Promovenden aus den Sozialwissenscha�
en und der Europäischen Ethnologie.
Die Dissertationsprojekte werden von
Vertreterinnen und Vertretern aus mindestens
zwei unterschiedlichen Disziplinen betreut.
Das sichert einerseits den interdisziplinären
Zugang zum Thema, erfüllt andererseits auch
die Funktion eines Mentoring für die Graduierten.

approach to their work and o� en regard the children as their own,
many Bolivian SOS mothers tend to see themselves more as employees
of a Western organization. »Or they justify their mother’s
role with self-sacrifi ce for the good of the child.« Either way, for
cultural scientist Sarah Speck the mother’s role will remain an
exciting research topic even a� er she has fi nished her dissertation.
Work in the research training group »Gender
as a Category of Knowledge« is based on the
history and theory of knowledge and focuses
on the following two main points: »The interrelation
of gender system and knowledge system«
and »Gender coding of knowledge objects
and the social body.« The German Research
Foundation (DFG) has extended the term of the
research training group until 2013 and given it
its highest funding priority. 18 postgraduates
are currently being supported by the DFG and
eleven PhD students by associated programmes.
They include cultural and historical scholars,
medical historians, educationalists, theologians
and legal scholars, as well as PhD students
in the social sciences and European ethnology.
The dissertation projects are supervised by
representatives of at least two diff erent disciplines.
On the one hand, this ensures an interdisciplinary
approach to the subject; on the
other, it also makes sure the postgraduates‘
mentoring needs are met.
