Three Conferences of the ARAM Society for Syro-Mesopotamian
Studies, Oxford, July 2011
The conferences deal with "Trade Routes and Seafaring
in the Ancient Near East" (04-06 July 2011), "The
Amorites" (11-13 July 2011) and "The Western Missions
in the Levant including Iran, Iraq & Egypt" (18-
20 July 2011) and will be held at the Oriental Institute,
University of Oxford, UK.

in Comparative Perspective”, King’s College,
London, 4-8 July 2011
Suggested topics might include, but are not limited to:
parallels to biblical, Jewish, and Christian tradition in
the Quran and Islamic literature; the relationships between
Jewish, Christian, and Muslim exegetical traditions;
the various discursive expressions of intercommunal
exchange and relations, including both dialogue
and polemic; Islam in European discourse; and
Muslim cultural, religious, social, and political life in
the West.

Second Gulf Research Meeting, University of

The Gulf Research Meeting is an activity of the Gulf
Research Centre at Cambridge. The meeting seeks to
provide an academic environment to foster Gulf studies
and to promote scholarly and academic exchange
among scholars working and/or having familiarity
with the Gulf region. The Gulf Research Meeting
aims to identify issues of importance to the Gulf region
and provide a basis for academic and empirical
research into those fields.

und kollektiver Gewalt: Vom Umgang
mit der Vergangenheit in Irak, Marokko, Libanon
und DDR“, Marburg, 7.-9. Juli 2011
Das Documentation and Research Center Iraq
(DARCI) im CNMS organisiert in Kooperation mit
den Fachgebieten Politik des NMO und Arabistik sowie
dem Zentrum für Konfliktforschung der Philipps-
Universität Marburg diese internationale Konferenz.
Durch den Vergleich von Aufarbeitungsprozessen
kollektiver Gewalt oder staatlicher Repression in Irak,
Marokko, Libanon und DDR sollen neue Erkenntnisse
– theoretischer wie empirischer Natur – für die
Transitional Justice – wie auch für die beteiligte Regional-
und Länderforschung gewonnen werden;
Möglichkeiten, Chancen und Risiken von Aufarbei-

tungsprozessen für Konflikt- und Regimetransformation
sowie für Identitätsbildungsprozesse werden ausgelotet.

Peoples, States and Nations in the Mediterranean

In 2011 Italian unification, proclaimed in 1861, will
be celebrated; 2011 is also the centenary of the Italian
colonial campaign in Libya. These celebrations offer
our Association the opportunity to debate three fundamental
questions in Middle Eastern studies, which
involve history, political science, literature and cultural
studies: a) the relationship between commemorations,
memory and identity constructions; b) the connections
between nationalism, colonialism and postcolonial
societies; c) the link between migrations,
globalization and self-identification processes.

International Conference: “Gender Transformations
in the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of
Africa”, University of Sana'a, 10-12 July 2011
The French Research Centre for Archaeology and Social
Sciences in Sana'a (CEFAS) is calling for paper
proposals for an international conference which will
focus on recent social changes, spatial and social mobilities,
as well as on locations, possibly emerging and
alternative places for such changes. The theoretical
framework will involve methodological reflexivity
regarding our precon-ceived notions when dealing
with the issue of gender, especially in this region. It
will elaborate on the centrality of the migration experiences
and their impact on gender transformations.
