After 80 days and 19 hours, Thomson crossed the finish line, victorious.

During the Vendée Globe, Thomson, like each contender, keeps
his vessel speeding along 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for 12
weeks. He sleeps in 10 or 20 minute bursts every hour or two for
four months straight in order to stay vigilant during constantly
changing conditions.
“Comfort costs you weight and weight means you go slower,”
says Thomson who subsists on freeze-dried food that he
rehydrates with the minimum amount of water needed to
survive. How does Thomson handle it
He prepares for the mental pressure much the same way any
athlete prepares for competition—with a coach, in his case a
sports psychologist, and concentrated practice. “A lot of it is
visualization techniques,” he says. “Part of this whole thing is
that I actually don’t have a choice. I can’t call time-out, I’m 2000
miles away from land.”
About half way through the 2012-2013 race, Thomson lost a crucial
power supply and faced a nasty choice: stop using lights and equipment
and stop communicating with home base almost completely,
including with his wife and young son, or drop out of the race.
“It wasn’t like there was no power. That’s always easy to deal
with. It’s the choice: finish the race and be massively uncomfortable
with very little communication at all, or carry on communicating
and don’t finish the race.”
History books will record his choice and his accomplishment.
This was Thomson’s third attempt at completing the prestigious
Vendée Globe. Finishing on the pedestal was an unexpected glory.
“What I do is not really about technical sailing. It’s about
human endeavor, adventure, man versus the elements.” During
the race, Thomson received emails from people who responded
to his video updates. “A lady with a terminal illness said my
stories inspired her to continue fighting her disease.”
Inspiration and, more specifically, “aspiration” are traits Thomson
says he has in common with the Hugo Boss brand. Their relationship
is one of the longest and most exemplary in the industry.
“No matter how big your boat is, as soon as you lose sight
of land, your boat looks small. And when you get to that
situation you understand how insignificant we as humans are in
this world. I find that a humbling experience.”
