350 rooms in total make up the public museum, and every
inch has something to see. Step outside into a portico and
you’ll see that instead of columns, neo-classical statues support
the building’s roof, the face of each one telling its own story.
Even the marble on the palace’s iconic green and white facade
is worth pausing to absorb. There is no end to discovery
at the Hermitage. It is as much a part of history as the collections
it contains.

Living Testament to Russia’s Golden Age
The first Winter Palace was built by Peter the Great when he
established the city that still bears his name as the new capital
of Russia in 1703. However, the real heritage of what stands
today belongs to Catherine the Great, who ruled over the
Golden Age of the Russian Empire from 1762 to 1796.
A student of the European Enlightenment, Catherine became
one of Europe’s most significant sovereigns. She maintained
friendships with the greatest philosophers of the day
and mediated disputes among her European neighbours,
seeking to establish Russia as a powerful actor in world affairs.
She was also an accomplished opera librettist, wrote her own
works of fiction, and (most importantly for us today) she was a
fervent collector of art and patron to the best architects.
To escape the relentless demands of royal life, Catherine
commissioned a new wing to the Winter Palace, which was
not only her home but the center of Russian politics. She
dubbed the new sanctuary the Hermitage.
In this new wing she began displaying the works of art that
she ceaselessly acquired from across Europe, establishing a
personal collection that included thousands of paintings by
the old masters, drawings, rare books, coins, and gem stones.
The collection grew so large that Catherine eventually commissioned
a second, even larger extension that would come to
be called the Great Hermitage.
Catherine’s love of art became tradition among the royalty,
and as Russia’s wealth grew over successive centuries, the art
collections continued to grow, and the palace was constantly
expanded and renovated.
After the 1917 revolution, the rule of the Tsars came to
an end, and the Winter Palace, along with all the Hermitage
buildings, was converted into a museum.
Today, the State Hermitage Museum encompasses a
total of six buildings on St. Petersburg’s Neva River Palace
Embankment.
