twelve surviving works hang in another room. Thirty
rooms are dedicated to Italian masterpieces alone. More are
filled by works highlighting some of the greatest accomplishments
in the history of fine art from the Renaissance onward.
And that is just the first floor.
Welcome to the Winter Palace, part of the State Hermitage
Museum, a royal complex of six buildings dating back to the
founding of St. Petersburg, Russia in the early 18th Century.
Once the primary residence of the Tsars who ruled over the
Russian Empire, today it is a public museum housing a profound
collection of art and artifacts from around the world.
No trip to Russia is complete without stepping through the
doors of this breathtaking palace.
