Mountain Sanctuary
After acquiring a small fortune (plus exhaustion and chronic illnesses) Huang
Ch’ing-hsien sought harmony with nature. In Taiwan’s mountains, and in an
ancient self-cultivation way, he found it many times over.
自 然 之 心
—— 訪 台 灣 威 特 生 態 園 主 黃 慶 賢
這 是 一 個 關 於 現 代 「 桃 花 源 」 的 故 事 , 故 事 中 的 主 人 公 最

入 台 灣 台 中 一 扇 不 起 眼 的 鐵 門 後 , 眼 前 彷 如 展
走 開 了 一 個 「 愛 麗 絲 」 夢 中 的 仙 境 。 奇 異 的 樹 木
伸 展 著 誇 張 的 葉 片 , 池 塘 畔 巨 大 的 灌 木 像 是 來 自 另 外 空
間 , 長 滿 青 苔 的 石 塊 隨 意 地 排 成 一 行 隊 伍 , 變 成 了 我 們
腳 下 的 「 路 」。 轉 角 處 , 一 個 清 秀 的 小 池 塘 正 環 抱 著 一
片 片 圓 圓 的 蓮 葉 , 精 巧 的 花 苞 小 心 翼 翼 地 探 出 水 面 , 好
奇 地 打 量 著 我 們 這 些 不 期 而 遇 的 訪 客 。
而 這 座 「 仙 境 」 的 主 人 , 此 時 正 微 笑 著 站 在 一 棵 繁
茂 的 大 樹 旁 , 為 我 們 指 點 著 。 抬 頭 一 望 , 樹 上 正 圍 著 一
條 綠 色 的 「 裙 裾 」, 這 是 鹿 角 蕨 , 曾 和 恐 龍 相 伴 的 侏 羅
紀 時 期 的 古 老 植 物 。 走 過 一 大 片 荒 蔓 的 野 草 叢 ,「 這 個
不 叫 荒 蕪 , 是 故 意 要 讓 它 這 樣 , 因 為 一 些 生 物 需 要 這 樣
的 環 境 。」 繼 續 沿 「 路 」 前 行 , 四 周 是 濃 密 的 綠 意 和 隨
意 一 瞥 就 可 發 現 的 「 小 風 景 」, 碧 藍 的 蜻 蜓 , 亮 橙 色 的
甲 蟲 , 嬌 美 精 緻 如 藝 術 品 的 蘭 花 。 這 裏 就 是 黃 慶 賢 花 費

的 情 景 依 然 歷 歷 在 目 , 夜 色 下 的 公 路 , 遠 處 幽 暗 的 群
山 , 心 中 暗 暗 許 下 諾 言 : 如 果 年 紀 大 一 點 , 賺 到 錢 , 該
去 買 土 地 , 買 山 。 然 而 , 實 現 夢 想 的 路 總 是 充 滿 了 曲 折
和 挑 戰 , 有 太 多 人 在 一 次 次 現 實 的 磨 礪 和 衝 擊 下 , 不 得

Taiwan. A lush island in the Pacific that, for the last century,
like many of the world’s natural beauties, faces deforestation.
But 25 years ago, one stand of forest and its careful
steward began collecting and cultivating Taiwan’s diverse species
and inadvertently created a living textbook of Taiwanese
biology. Along the way, he unexpectedly began another type of
cultivation: the ancient practice of self-cultivation.
In 1987, fresh out of the military, Huang Ch’ing-hsien
joined Taiwan’s booming economy, working until midnight
every night at the metal printing company he owned with his
brother, a venture that thrust them into debt three times the
amount of a new home. But Taiwan’s economy was burgeoning
and they could taste success. The work was so grueling and
Huang so persistent that his health was near collapse.
Huang remembered when, at the age of 17, he had set out
from his village in the forest to travel the highway to Taipei
in search of a job. He can still picture the Datun mountains
silhouetted against the evening sky that night. At that moment
an idea struck him that he should eventually buy land in the
picturesque island’s mountains.
A seed had been planted, but the pace of an entrepreneur’s
life in 1980s Taipei swept him up, and the youngster’s dream
of going off into the mountains was lost.
For the moment.
As his health deteriorated and fortune accumulated, that old
wish for a tranquil plot of land in the mountains resurfaced.
With his brother running the factory, he set out to find a place
where he could save his health, his marriage, and some of Taiwan’s
rare flora, which he had always loved.
The mountainous Sinshe Township of Taichung County,
seemed perfect to him for an eco-retreat. “In fact, I had no
idea about plants, animals, or ecology,” Huang admits. “I just
felt that I wanted to be surrounded by nature, not by society.”
The wealth he made from his business in Taipei made the
dream possible.
Today, it’s almost impossible to picture him as a novice.
