The product demanded by this client
implied new specifications for the SBU
Caprolactones. The product demanded is a
polyol (polyhydric alcohol) in a granulated
form which was indispensable for the client
for a technology that it had itself patented.
At the time the project was being put
together, the client had entered into a joint
venture with a partner who was a
competitor of the Solvay SBU Caprolactones.
This partner was refusing to supply
the product in question to the client, which
is why the client turned to Solvay. As the
product is earmarked for use in food
applications, stringent rules had to be
respected. The laboratory put in a lot of hard
work to provide the American authorities
(Food and Drug Administration) and the
European authorities with all the required
information. The team worked overtime
and gained invaluable experience in the course
of this administrative process. The first
orders started to come in back in 2002. While
awaiting the go-ahead from the authorities,
the time was put to good use by developing
the production process with an external
partner, a company that was subsequently
bought by Solvay Solexis. An effort was also
made to gradually improve the packaging.
We therefore succeeded in producing a new
physical and chemical variant of the polyol
CAPA. We exceeded the 100 tonnes mark
in 2005 and have set our sights on
150 tonnes in 2007.

DEVELOPMENT OF A EURECO ® GRADE
FOR A BREAKTHROUGH IN AUTOMATIC DISHWASHING
LAUNCHED BY RECKITT BENCKISER (QUANTUM ® )
CLEAN AND SPARKLING!
Reckitt Benckiser, the world-wide leader
in automatic dishwasher detergents,
is continually searching for new formulations to
offer the consumer a more effective and more
ecological range of detergents. This time their
focus was on the development and launch
of a revolutionary new generation of automatic
dishwash tablets containing the Solvay peracid
P.A.P. (tradename EURECO ® ) as the active
bleaching ingredient. The SBU Detergent had
to race against the clock, as they only had eight
months to come up with a new EURECO ®
formulation for this new dishwash product.
The SBU Detergent had two major targets in this
project. The first aim was to develop a grinding
technology in order to satisfy the customer
request for a very fine powdered EURECO ®
grade. The second target was more difficult, as
one formulation component had to be replaced
with other additives that would be compatible
with the peracid and acceptable for the
consumer under existing and pending European
Union legislation. A reformulated grade
of EURECO ® was successfully developed which
was accepted by Reckitt Benckiser, as its key
stain removal agent offering a new level of
cleaning performance in Quantum ® . The new
dishwasher product was launched in the United
Kingdom in October 2005 under the
Finish/Calgonit Quantum ® Powerball brand.
This Quantum ® product represents the first use
of Eureco ® in a consumer application, launched
with the global market leader for automatic
dish-washing. This project has resulted in the
development of a new generation of EURECO ®
granules, offering superior dissolution
characteristics, which will pave the way
for other uses for EURECO ® .
