In Mr. Brown's report No. B 730 of 15th March, 1882, it is stated that
during the previous year, closing 3l8t December, 1881, a sum of £5,799 16 3
was spent on Roads and Bridges; but the writer points out the difficulty of
comparing work done with money spent, inasmuch as the particulars of the former
apply to the Calendar Year ending Slst December, 1881, and of the latter to the
Financial Year ending 31st March, 1882.
The works to which special reference is made in this report are as follows :—
• Nicosia-Larnaca Road, reported to be greatly improved, and the improvement
of all gradients to the limit of 1 in 20 is contemplated. This intention was
apparently never fulfilled as there are still gradients exceeding this limit on this
road.
An interesting comparison is given of the rates paid for transport at this
time. It ia recorded that the rates of transport of Locust material from Larnaca
to Vatili, between which points no Cart-road then existed, was 7c.p. per ton per
mile as against 4c.p. by cart between Larnaca and Nicosia. At this latter rate
the transport between the two last-named places was in 1881—lis. 5c.p. per ton.
In 1898 it was 7s. 4^c.p. but in the present year 1902 it is 5s. 5c.p.
The other roads which received attention were :—
The Nicosia-Kythrea Road—8 miles on which Earthwork and Side drains were
chiefly done.
The Larnaca-Limassol Road—the cutting of Side-ditches nearly the whole length.
A good Bridle road was undertaken between Episcopi and Kouklia, a length
of 23 miles, and a Cart road thence to within 2^ miles of Ktima.
Also, 6 miles of roads were made around Nicosia by Convicts.
In Mr. Brown's report dated 30th May of the same year (B 898) he makes
various reoommendations and reports the following progress :—
Nicosia-Larnaca Road, 26 miles, in good working order.
Nicosia-Famagusta Road, 37 miles, most of the minor streams bridged and the
worst parts metalled.
Nicosia-Tricomo Road, 32 miles, (a) Nicosia-Kythrea 8 miles, all minor bridges
and culverts built and half the length metalled ; (b) Kythrea to Lefkonico
impracticable for wheels during the winter months; (e) Lefkonioo to
Tricomo in fairly good condition, requires little.
Tricomo-Rizo-Oarpas Road, 39 miles, the Earthwork was constructed in 1880 but
little else done. " The completion might be allowed to stand over."— Vide
report.
Nicosia-Peristerona-Lefka Road, 33^ miles, small bridges between Nicosia and
Peristerona built but not beyond.
Larnaca-Famagusta Road, 26 miles. " Little need be done except draining and
metalling the heavier parts across the Livadhia Marshes."— Vide report.
Larnaca-Limassol Road, 45 miles. (See CO. despatch No. 555 of 12/5/82, and
Mr. Brown's report of lst March, 1881).
Much done to improve this road. Metalled from Larnaca to South side of
Embankment across the Salt Lake, 3 miles formed with side drains aa far as
Mazoto (13th mile.) From Mazoto to Zygi, 11 miles, formed, etc., for about half
the distance through cultivated lands. From Zygi to near Mari, 2^ miles, little
has been done. From this point to Amathus, 2^ miles. Earthworks formed, portions
