Besides these there arc the roads maintained from what is known as the
Pubhc Loan Fund, and of which there are 56-75 miles. The expenditure on these
has been £527 19 5.
Of constructional work first and foremost must rank the completion of the
formation with all absolutely necessary bridges of the Karavostassi-Polis-Paphos
Road whereby the wilds of Tylliria have been opened up and an alternative route
both shorter and easier made between Nicosia and Paphos.
Hardly second to this is the completion of the last link in the Circular Island
Road, namely, that between Morphou and Myrtou.
The construction of the Nicosia-Paleokhorio Road was further advanced by
the completion of the bridle path on lines of a TIL class road, and by the continuation
of the widening, by village labour, of the part madt' last ycju'. Veiy
little more work will now suffice to make this road practicable for carts.
Various diversions were carried out on the old Platres-Troodos Military mule
path and little now remains to be done to complete the conversion of this track,
previously only just passable for a lightly laden cart, into a good IV class carriage
road.
A commencement was made by cutting the preliminary berm of a road to
join the main road near the Chief Secretary's Office, Troodos, with the Plrtres-
Prodromo Road near Trooditissa Monastery,
Improvements were made to the private carriage drive to Government Cottage,
Troodos, the line for, and construction of which, had been undertaken by the
Royal Engineers some years ago.
No bridges of \'ery great size were constructed during this year though some
most useful work has Iteeii done, chief among these being the completion of all
absolutely necessary bridges between Stroumbi-Polis, Polis-Pomos and Karavostassi-
Pomos ; also tlie construction of the bridges over the Ovgos and Aloupos Rivers
between Morphou and Myrtou and the widening of the existing wooden bridges
and the building of a new stone bridge m the Panagra Pass.
